Shakeology arrived yesterday with much anticipation, but little fanfare – just a ring on the door from the UPS guy. Eagerly opening the box, I was pleased to see a zip lock pouch, which is great for “green packaging” and not loading up our landfills with more plastic containers.
The contents, as we all know from the website are outrageous, but the bottom line is taste. I would say that if you had someone blindfolded and put a glass of chocolate milk and a glass of chocolate Shakeology in front of someone, they wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. The real test was giving Grace her afternoon chocolate milk (1% milk and a little chocolate Meal Replacement shake) made with Shakeology and she actually drank it and liked it. As I said, to me it is like chocolate milk and I just tried a little to taste it.
What I put in my body is intended to fuel it and, if possible, enhance performance in my training. The real test came this morning when I decided to have 8 ounces of 2% milk with a scoop up to the line (I don’t know if that is a scoop or full is a scoop) of Shakeology at about 5:30 this morning. I had nothing else to eat before my run (I had some coffee and water as I always do) and started running with John at 7:00. With no other factors contributing to my run (in fact dinner was pretty poor last night and I was apprehensive having had a stomach virus go through the family during the week), I had a great run and actually hung with John the whole time. Normally, I worry about John having a sore neck from turning back to talk and project his voice that far back, but today we talked the whole time and I was pretty much stride for stride.
The bottom line is that we ran two minutes faster (1:05:15) on a loop in the foothills at 6,000 feet that we had done before and the first field test was a great success. I can’t wait to do more “testing”!
