The 4 Marathons of Life

In July, I posted on my blog about my "Marathon of Life". On September 1st, I completed 60 years of running and realized that I wanted a new challenge. That challenge expands on my idea and explores the concept of a lifetime being four marathons. With the help of Antrhopic's Claude, we came up with this framework of what to focus on in each 26.2 years of your life. This is not medical or scientific advice, but based on my own experiences. As you will see at the end, I am finishing my third marathon and will soon start my fourth. Join me in seeing if you can complete all four marathons of life!

Which Marathon Are You In?

Think of your life as four marathons of 26.2 years each — 104.8 years total. Each one sets up the next. Find out which marathon you're in, and what it takes to "run" a strong one.

Wherever you land on that list, the advice for your marathon is the advice that actually moves the needle right now — not generic "healthy aging" tips aimed at someone twice your age or half it.

What Each Marathon Requires to "Finish"

Marathon 1: 0–26.2 — Base Building

Marathon 2: 26.2–52.4 — Peak Performance

Marathon 3: 52.4–78.6 — Preserve the Engine

Marathon 4: 78.6–104.8 — Extend the Range

The Proof: My Own Third "Marathon"

I'm not just writing about this framework — I'm running it. I'm 75, and I have been running since September 1st, 1966. I'm in the final stretch of my own Marathon 3, heading into Marathon 4. Instead of just coaching this from the sidelines, I'm documenting my own run at it in public: real training data, real results, no lab and no seven-figure budget — just a coach with six decades of experience testing what actually works as he crosses into his own fourth marathon. The image below is from my actual third marathon - the Philadelphia Independence Marathon in 1994.

Follow my results and protocols on my Coach Blog and Running for a Lifetime blog as I go.

Start With Your Own "Marathon"

Figure out which marathon you're in from the list above, then dig into the specific advice for it. Whether you're 28, 48, or 68, the goal is the same: "run" this marathon well enough to start the next one strong.
