What My Father Taught Me About Hard Work

My Father taught me about hard work and consistency. He taught me to show up every day and to put in a day’s work. As a dairy farmer, he had to work 7 days a week, 365 days a year. There were no days off or vacations, or even sick days. He worked, and he taught me to work – every day, no matter what.

Father’s Day always gives me a chance to reflect on the lessons that stay with us long after childhood.

One of the most valuable lessons I learned was the importance of showing up and doing the work, whether you feel like it or not. Success rarely comes from a single great effort. More often, it comes from small actions repeated consistently over time.

That lesson has served me well throughout 59 years of running, 43 years of coaching, and nearly two decades as a BODi Coach.

Fitness works the same way. Strength is built one workout at a time. Endurance is built one run, hike, or walk at a time. Healthy habits are built one day at a time. The people who achieve lasting results are rarely the ones who do everything perfectly. They are the ones who keep showing up.

As I continue to pursue new goals, I find myself appreciating those lessons more than ever. Consistency has helped me continue running, hiking, strength training, and to stay active while building what I call a Health Retirement Fund.

This Father’s Day, I’m grateful for the people who taught me the value of hard work, perseverance, and personal responsibility. Those lessons continue to guide me today.

Whether you’re a father, celebrating a father, or remembering one, I hope you have a meaningful Father’s Day and find time to appreciate the people who helped shape your journey.

Happy Father’s Day.
