Training logs are inextricably linked to motivation, and the more we use them, the more motivated we are. I know that is a bold statement, and I am sure that there are lots of people who are highly motivated and don’t even use a training log. Others are feeling overwhelmed by all the feedback and are pulling back. I am not there yet.
I wake up and download my sleep data to the Polar Vantage V2 that I use to monitor sleep. I take that one off and put on my training Vantage V2, so I don’t lose any steps, and then wear it during my run, hike, or walk.
After the workout, the data goes to Polar Flow, is recorded, and then it is synced to Strava and Apple Health. I go into Strava and give the workout a title, explain what it was, and then pretty much forget about it except to keep track of total mileage for the week, which is what’s motivating me now.
I’ve had some significant trials in the past few months, but I was determined to keep my mileage up so that the stress from those trials didn’t impact my health. Years ago, I did let that happen and I regret that. When I joined Strava toward the end of 2017, I had a new motivator, and it has been motivating me ever since, tracking my 3,979 workouts in almost 9 years.
Only you can know if training logs are good for motivating you, but it’s worth a try if you are struggling with motivation!
