Especially these days, there\u2019s so much to gain from yoga, for kids\u00a0and parents alike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYoga has an abundance of benefits whether you\u2019re practicing solo or as a family,\u201d she says. \u201cIt reduces stress and anxiety, improves focus and concentration, and can also lower blood pressure, improve sleep, increase energy, and improve muscle strength and flexibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Benefits of Yoga for the Family<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Research has indicated that yoga (for kids and teens alike) can boost self-esteem, memory, and mood.<\/p>\n<h3>Benefits for kids<\/h3>\n<p>All these benefits have been shown to improve their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dovepress.com\/effect-of-mindfulness-and-yoga-on-quality-of-life-for-elementary-schoo-peer-reviewed-article-PRBM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quality of life<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19771929\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">overall wellbeing<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25412616\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stress management<\/a>. Other\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25988743\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research has even connected<\/a>\u00a0a consistent yoga practice to mitigating symptoms of attention deficit disorder, including inattentiveness and hyperactivity.<\/p>\n<h3>Benefits for teens<\/h3>\n<p>Teens can reap these benefits as well. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4605219\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study on yoga for kids in high school<\/a>\u00a0found that after just a single class, participants showed decreases in anger, depression symptoms, and fatigue.<\/p>\n<h3>Benefits for parents<\/h3>\n<p>For parents or caregivers, doing yoga together creates the opportunity to get some quality time where everyone can connect, DiPietro says. You may even get to know each other a little better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou get to see how your child learns and persists, and your child sees the power of a healthy lifestyle,\u201d she notes. \u201cSimply practicing\u00a0breath exercises\u00a0and finding synchronicity can build a stronger bond.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>The Best Yoga Poses for Kids<\/h2>\n<p>A great introduction to yoga for the whole family is a short Level 1 class on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bodi.pxf.io\/c\/4818714\/2211057\/27336\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BODi\u2019s Yoga Fifty Two program<\/a><\/strong>. These offer some excellent\u00a0yoga poses for beginners, and you can choose the duration that fits into everyone\u2019s schedule. For example, you can break a 30-minute class down into two parts so you practice 15 minutes at a time. That way, you can establish consistency and get into the habit of doing yoga together.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to flow through some poses on your own, here are a few that are good for beginners.<\/p>\n<h3>1.\u00a0Child\u2019s pose<\/h3>\n<div class=\"fluidvids\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"fluidvids-item\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oHdmBNojnc4?si=Z52KAe9SXc5gFdym&amp;rel=0&amp;modestbranding=1\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-fluidvids=\"loaded\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Start on all fours, with your hands directly below your shoulders and your knees hip width or wider. Bring your big toes together.<\/li>\n<li>Exhale and sink your hips back toward your heels. Rest your belly between your thighs and your forehead on your mat.<\/li>\n<li>Extend your arms out in front of you (palms down, to stretch the whole back) or along your sides (palms up, to stretch between the shoulders).<\/li>\n<li>Stay for a few breaths up to a few minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>2.\u00a0Cat-cow stretch<\/h3>\n<div class=\"fluidvids\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"fluidvids-item\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Fa4ZMS5M7xA?si=X4KHOJgHdUKBTb8s&amp;rel=0&amp;modestbranding=1\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-fluidvids=\"loaded\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><b>Inhale: Cow pose<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Get down on all fours, with your knees under your hips and your hands under your shoulders. Keep your back flat, your gaze toward the floor, and your neck long.<\/li>\n<li>As you inhale, arch your back, lifting your tailbone and chest toward the ceiling while dropping your belly toward the mat.<\/li>\n<li>Keep your shoulders away from your ears, shoulder blades broad across your back, and your head in line with your torso.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Exhale: Cat pose<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>From cow pose, as you exhale, round your back, tuck your tailbone, and curl your chin toward your chest.<\/li>\n<li>Keep your shoulders and knees in place.<\/li>\n<li>Inhale into cow pose.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat this flow for up to 10 breaths, or longer if desired.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>3.\u00a0Downward-facing dog<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-168325\" src=\"https:\/\/bodiblog.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/why-kids-should-do-yoga-600-downward-dog.jpeg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bodiblog.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/why-kids-should-do-yoga-600-downward-dog.jpeg 2000w, https:\/\/bodiblog.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/why-kids-should-do-yoga-600-downward-dog-715x358.jpeg 715w, https:\/\/bodiblog.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/why-kids-should-do-yoga-600-downward-dog-394x197.jpeg 394w, https:\/\/bodiblog.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/why-kids-should-do-yoga-600-downward-dog-340x170.jpeg 340w\" alt=\"Trainer Does Downward Dog | Why Kids Should Do Yoga\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Start on all fours, with your knees directly below your hips, and wrists a few inches forward of your shoulders. Point your fingertips forward and spread your fingers wide.<\/li>\n<li>On an exhale, tuck your toes, press into your hands, straighten your arms and legs, and lift your hips up toward the ceiling. Keep your hands shoulder-width apart and feet hip-width apart.<\/li>\n<li>Rotate your shoulders outward to avoid scrunching them. Keep your arms straight, and engage your biceps to keep your elbows from locking out. Look back at your toes and keep your ears in line with your arms.<\/li>\n<li>Hold the pose for one minute.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How to Progress in Your Family Practice<\/h2>\n<p>Whether you\u2019re doing yoga as a family, as a parent-kid combo, or seeing your older child or teenager trying some solo yoga practices, it\u2019s likely that as you get more comfortable with yoga, you\u2019ll want to keep adding poses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re ready to up the challenge, you may want to try some higher-level Yoga52 classes,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bodi.com\/blog\/yoga52-trainers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brent Laffoon<\/a>, a Yoga52 trainer. \u201cEven if you and your kids can\u2019t do every pose or sequence, it\u2019s fun to explore different options,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, you can tweak the poses and even invent some of your own based on basic yoga poses.
