Roy, R.D.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to cafeterias, many campuses have separate on-site eateries, vending machines, and snack bars (not to mention the\u00a0alcohol) that \u201chelp\u201d you gain the infamous freshman (or sophomore\/junior\/senior) 15.<\/p>\n<h3>You move less<\/h3>\n<p>For many young people, this decade ushers in their very first nine-to-five job. While not all jobs require sitting at a desk all day, most do.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the number of sedentary jobs has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.heart.org\/HEARTORG\/HealthyLiving\/PhysicalActivity\/FitnessBasics\/The-Price-of-Inactivity_UCM_307974_Article.jsp#.WPD2SlPyvSx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased 83 percent since the 1950s<\/a>, and work weeks often last longer than the typical 40 hours, as technology continues to blur the line between work and non-work hours.<\/p>\n<p>In your teens, you probably spent your free time playing sports or doing some kind of physical activity.<\/p>\n<p>But with 40+ hours per week parked at a desk, there\u2019s probably a major drop in your daily activity level \u2014 even if you do manage to get a workout or two in during the week.<\/p>\n<h3>Life happens<\/h3>\n<p>Adulting is hard. Living on your own, paying bills, and other responsibilities that you\u2019ve never had to deal with before are now part of your daily routine.<\/p>\n<p>Newfound independence can trigger major stress, another\u00a0notable culprit when it comes to gaining weight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn your 20s, the main culprit to weight gain is stress, which causes high cortisol, one of your body\u2019s key fat-storage hormones,\u201d says Dr. Sara Gottfried, bestselling author of \u201cThe Hormone Cure\u201d and \u201cThe Hormone Reset Diet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cortisol, a hormone released in response to stress, can wreak havoc on our bodies, she adds.<\/p>\n<p>Help reset your cortisol levels by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dujs.dartmouth.edu\/2011\/02\/the-physiology-of-stress-cortisol-and-the-hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal-axis\/#.WLnJYhLyvok\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weaning yourself off alcohol\u00a0<\/a>for three days, which can help your sleep and stress levels, Gottfried suggests.<\/p>\n<h3>Lack of sleep<\/h3>\n<p>Speaking of, everyone needs more sleep, period. But this is when the lack of it begins to have a serious impact on your life and health as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>Sleep goes hand in hand with weight maintenance for a number of reasons.<\/p>\n<p>First off, plenty of quality sleep can help you power through tough workouts. Lack of sleep can\u00a0decrease your endurance, which can make it harder to give it your all.<\/p>\n<p>Not racking up enough zz\u2019s can mess with your hunger hormones, which can lead to\u00a0weight gain\u00a0\u2014 even if you eat clean and work out regularly.<\/p>\n<p>Your stomach produces\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4443295\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ghrelin<\/a>, a hormone that tells the brain we\u2019re hungry, and production of ghrelin can ramp up when we\u2019re continually not getting enough sleep.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, your body may ramp up cortisol production if you don\u2019t get enough sleep.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re having trouble getting quality sleep, try some\u00a0natural remedies\u00a0before you reach for the quick-fix over-the-counter stuff.<\/p>\n<h3>Bad diet<\/h3>\n<p>Feeding yourself is also part of your new adulting role. But at this point in your life, you may not have a ton of healthy recipes or\u00a0proper nutrition information\u00a0under your belt.<\/p>\n<p>And with an endless array of food-delivery services at your fingertips, it\u2019s easy for your eating habits to run amok.<\/p>\n<h3>Tips to maintain your weight in your 20s:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Try to make cheesy fries, chips, and pizza the occasional treat, not on the reg.<\/li>\n<li>Ditch coffee after 12 p.m. or if you\u2019re legally drinking alcohol, ahem, then try taking a break for a few days.<\/li>\n<li>Stick to a regular bedtime and skip screen time in the bedroom.<\/li>\n<li>Learn how to cook\u00a0and\u00a0prep balanced meals in proper portions\u00a0and\u00a0pack your own lunch to bring to work to stay on track.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Why You Gain Weight In Your 30s<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10170286929 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Why-You-Gain-Weight-as-You-Age.iStock.inpost2.jpg\" alt=\"Why You Gain Weight as You Age\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>You start to lose muscle and gain fat<\/h3>\n<p>In your 30s, you start to\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/003998.htm\">lose lean tissue<\/a><\/u>. While muscle decline may not be noticeable at first, the average person loses around five pounds of muscle every decade after 30, according to Gottfried.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, body fat creeps up steadily after you hit the big 3-0.<\/p>\n<h3>Your hormones start to change<\/h3>\n<p>In terms of hormonal changes, women face \u201cestrogen dominance\u201d during this decade, which means they have more estrogen than progesterone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne reason estrogen dominance is connected to fat-loss resistance is because of the cross-talk between two important hormones of metabolism: insulin and estrogen,\u201d Gottfried says.<\/p>\n<p>This increase in estrogen may cause you to gain\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.3109\/13697137.2012.707385\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more total body fat and abdominal fat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>You have kids<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cAs young parents raise their children in sometimes chaotic homes with many activities and needs, regular mealtimes and home-cooked meals may be in short supply,\u201d Roy says.<\/p>\n<p>Even the most well-intentioned families can default to fast food between soccer practice, play dates, homework, and piano lessons.<\/p>\n<p>But convenience meals \u2014 fast food, take-out, pre-packaged meals \u2014 are usually highly processed and filled with fat, sodium, and\/or sugar.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re cooking at home, then you may be fighting a losing battle against a small (literally) army of\u00a0picky eaters\u00a0or a\u00a0partner who isn\u2019t that concerned\u00a0about weight loss.<\/p>\n<h3>Tips to maintain your weight in your 30s:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Planning healthy recipes ahead of time and get your\u00a0meal prep on point.<\/li>\n<li>Plan\u00a0<u>active family outings<\/u>\u00a0like post-dinner walks, weekend hikes, and bike rides.<\/li>\n<li>Kill two birds with one stone by doing\u00a0fitness + nutrition programs\u00a0that help you build muscle, burn fat\u00a0<em>and<\/em> get your diet and nutrition in order.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Why You Gain Weight In Your 40s<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10170286931 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Why-You-Gain-Weight-as-You-Age.iStock.inpost3.jpg\" alt=\"Why You Gain Weight as You Age\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Women may enter menopause<\/h3>\n<p>For women, this decade may include a major life change:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealth.gov\/menopause\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">menopause<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While everyone is different, women experience menopause between 40 and 58 years old (though some women can experience it as early as their 30s or as late as their 60s).<\/p>\n<p>Hormonal changes brought on by menopause can add\u00a0extra weight around the midsection.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, irritability, hot flashes, and other symptoms of menopause may have you feeling a whole lot less motivated to work out.<\/p>\n<h3>Testosterone declines<\/h3>\n<p>While men and women both produce testosterone, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jcem\/article-lookup\/doi\/10.1210\/jc.2006-1859\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decline in this hormone<\/a>\u00a0is a factor in age-related weight gain for men.<\/p>\n<p>This decline occurs gradually from ages 40 to 65, according to Gottfried. Lower testosterone can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10442580\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increase fat levels<\/a>, reduce strength, and negatively affect sleep.<\/p>\n<h3>Tips to maintain your weight in your 40s:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Plan ahead\u00a0<\/b>by laying out your workout clothes the night before. Or stash them in your car so you can work out after work, or wake up a little earlier to squeeze in a\u00a0home workout.<\/li>\n<li><b>Prioritize sleep\u00a0<\/b>to help keep cortisol in check.<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li>Increase<b>\u00a0resistance training\u00a0<\/b>to help bump up testosterone levels, recommends Gottfried.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Why You Gain Weight In Your 50s and Beyond<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10170286935 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Why-You-Gain-Weight-as-You-Age.iStock.inpost4.jpg\" alt=\"Why You Gain Weight as You Age\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Insulin resistance can go down the drain<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cOnce you hit 50, low testosterone, plus rising blood sugar and insulin levels cause weight gain,\u201d Gottfried says.<\/p>\n<p>If you have insulin resistance, that means your cells can\u2019t absorb the extra blood glucose the body generates from the food you eat.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, the liver converts that glucose into fat, which can lead to weight gain.<\/p>\n<h3>Your body may not work like it used to<\/h3>\n<p>Physical limitations \u2014 from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niams.nih.gov\/health_info\/bone\/Osteoporosis\/Conditions_Behaviors\/osteoporosis_arthritis.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">osteoporosis and arthritis<\/a>\u00a0to hip, knee, and other joint problems\u2014 can limit movement, Roy says.<\/p>\n<p>While some age-related conditions won\u2019t make it impossible to get in a good workout, achy joints can make it harder to run, jump, or lift like you used to.<\/p>\n<h3>Weight gain can turn into weight loss<\/h3>\n<p>Men often gain weight until they\u2019re around 55 and then start to lose weight as they age further. Women, on the other hand, tend to gain weight until they turn 65.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/003998.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shift from weight gain to loss<\/a>\u00a0usually happens because fat replaces lean muscle tissue, and muscle weighs more than fat by volume.<\/p>\n<h3>Tips to maintain your weight in your 50s and beyond:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>If you\u2019re unable to be as active as you were in your 30s and 40s, adjust your\u00a0meal portions\u00a0to avoid overeating.<\/li>\n<li>Continue to do resistance training to help keep your bones strong, and eat plenty of\u00a0high-quality protein.<\/li>\n<li>Continue to manage stress &#8211; yoga,\u00a0meditate,\u00a0practice breathing exercises, take long baths \u2014 whatever helps you relax.<\/li>\n<li>Feeling creaky?
