So whether you\u2019re working out, doing chores, or simply\u00a0walking\u00a0outdoors, consider extending your activity. Here are a few of the benefits of being outside.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Spending Time in Nature May Improve Short-term Memory<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-168535 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/20125235\/benefits-of-being-outside-600-walking.jpeg\" alt=\"Close Up Shot of Someone on Walk | Benefits of Being Outside\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you find yourself a little more forgetful than usual, it might be worth your time to stop what you\u2019re doing and head for the nearest park for a quick walk.<\/p>\n<p>In a study of short-term memory:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One group was sent on a stroll through an arboretum<\/li>\n<li>Another had to walk through busy city streets<\/li>\n<li>The group that got to see the trees performed better on a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1467-9280.2008.02225.x\">short-term memory<\/a>\u00a0task than the city-walkers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So the next time you can\u2019t remember what it is you were supposed to be doing, it may help to reap the benefits of being outside and take a walk in the woods.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Being Outdoors Might Aid Cognition<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-168533 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/20125225\/benefits-of-being-outside-600-cognition.jpeg\" alt=\"Man Works Indoors | Benefits of Being Outside\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just simply the ability to recall things that gets better when you get some good outdoor time.<\/p>\n<p>Studies have found that outdoor activities may\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/j.1467-9280.2008.02225.x\">boost cognitive function overall<\/a>\u00a0by offering the brain a wide variety of low-key, modestly-attention-grabbing stimuli (instead of the direct, stress-inducing stimuli like an urgent Slack notification from your boss).<\/p>\n<p>And the more time you spend outdoors, the greater the effect: A study in PLOS ONE found that backpackers who took a creative problem-solving test after four days isolated from technology performed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0051474\">50-percent better<\/a>\u00a0than those who took the test before hitting the trail.<\/p>\n<p>Although we all can\u2019t always take four days off to give our brains a boost, even a short amount of time will help, and it all comes in addition to the\u00a0mental benefits of regular ol\u2019 exercise, too!<\/p>\n<h2>3. Being Outside May Improve Mood<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-168534 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/20125230\/benefits-of-being-outside-600-mood.jpeg\" alt=\"Woman Looks Out of Train Window | Benefits of Being Outside\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although many of us have likely had the experience of coming back from a good hike or trail run in the park feeling better about the world, new evidence shows that the benefits of being outside may include better moods.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/newsletter_article\/a-prescription-for-better-health-go-alfresco\">piggybacks<\/a>\u00a0with the general effects of exercise.
