It\u2019s best to build healthy eating habits slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that setbacks are normal, and learning to deal with them is critical for making healthy eating habits that stick.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Eat Healthy<\/h2>\n<p>Does healthy eating matter? Absolutely. It is a form of self-care that may help you gain a better quality of life.<\/p>\n<p>Proper nutrition enables you to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4061651\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lose and maintain weight<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jandonline.org\/article\/S2212-2672(15)01802-X\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enhance exercise performance<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/heart-disease\/in-depth\/heart-healthy-diet\/art-20047702\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">improve health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It also helps to think of the side effects of\u00a0<em>not\u00a0<\/em>eating healthy.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chronicdisease\/resources\/publications\/factsheets\/nutrition.htm#:~:text=The%20Harmful%20Effects%20of%20Poor%20Nutrition&amp;text=In%20the%20United%20States%2C%2019,system%20%24147%20billion%20a%20year.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poor nutrition<\/a>\u00a0might increase your risk for a number of health problems.<\/p>\n<h2>Can You Overdo Healthy Eating?<\/h2>\n<p>In a word: yes. \u201cFor some, healthy eating can turn into\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/what-is-orthorexia-nervosa?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">orthorexia<\/a>\u00a0or an unhealthy obsession with following the \u2018perfect\u2019 diet,\u201d says Brittany Crump, M.P.H., R.D. at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/savornutritionsa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Savor Nutrition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s essentially an unrealistic goal, and those who try to follow it can damage their wellbeing. When an orthorexic can\u2019t follow their diet perfectly (maybe life gets in the way), they may feel shame or self-loathing,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<p>Orthorexia\u00a0isn\u2019t officially recognized as an eating disorder like anorexia, but it can result in similar health consequences, namely malnutrition.<\/p>\n<p>If you think you may have orthorexia, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nationaleatingdisorders.org\/help-support\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Eating Disorder Association<\/a>\u00a0has more information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith orthorexia, it\u2019s more about the individual\u2019s mindset than the diet they follow,\u201d says Crump. \u201cYou can have orthorexia with any type of diet \u2014 vegan, gluten-free, clean eating, calorie counting, and more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s essential to have a healthy mindset, especially if you want to develop healthy habits that are sustainable.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Make a Healthy Eating Plan<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-134670 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/How-Build-Healthy-Eating-Habits.chopping.600.jpg\" alt=\"Young woman cooking at home\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A good plan is full of healthy habits you can maintain over time. Celebrate your wins<\/h2>\n<p>Don\u2019t forget that you\u2019re making healthy eating habits for the long haul, which means you\u2019ll need to stay motivated.<\/p>\n<p>One way to do that is to reward yourself when you see progress.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you finally kicked that sugary soda habit for six straight months. Give yourself a non-food reward (like a new pair of shoes) to acknowledge the win.<\/p>\n<h2>What Prevents You From Eating Healthy?<\/h2>\n<p>Healthy eating setbacks are personal to your circumstance and lifestyle, but common hurdles include:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Not having social support<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A common question that people ask is, \u201cHow can I eat healthy when no one else is healthy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If your friends and family are not on board with healthy eating, try to find a group of people who are.<\/p>\n<p>You can join online groups to connect with like-minded individuals to help you stay on track.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Lack of time<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>To make healthy habits stick, you may need to front time to meal plan, grocery shop, and food prep.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re less likely to make impulsive food choices with healthy meals and snacks conveniently in place.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Feeling deprived<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>At the start, it can feel like you\u2019re giving up the foods you like.
