The holidays are a joyous time of year but also overwhelming \u2014 lots of people to catch up with, tons of gifts to buy, and so much work to manage it all, aka, \u201chang-xiety\u201d (holiday anxiety).<\/p>\n<p>While we can\u2019t relieve all holiday stress (like buying for your picky in-laws), we can help you cope.<\/p>\n<p>This holiday season, we\u2019re counting down eight ways to practice self-care.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Nurture Your Body<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/2024\/08\/15\/how-to-build-healthy-eating-habits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eating right<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/2024\/08\/16\/why-is-sleep-so-important\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sleeping<\/a>\u00a0are basic ways you can take care of yourself every day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExercise is also super-important,\u201d says Jennifer Fuller, E-YRT 500, a yoga instructor in Lake Tahoe, California. \u201cWhatever that looks like for you \u2014\u00a0walking, HIIT,\u00a0running,\u00a0yoga,\u00a0Pilates,\u00a0barre\u00a0\u2014 prioritize physical movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dancing\u00a0to \u201cJingle Bell Rock\u201d totally counts as cardio, too.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Honor Your Emotions<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-152523 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/01131453\/holiday-stress-pandemic-journaling.png\" alt=\"woman on bench journaling | holiday stress tips\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPractice acceptance and remind yourself that it\u2019s OK to feel sad or lonely,\u201d says psychologist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pvdpsych.com\/nicole-issa-psyd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nicole Issa<\/a>, PsyD. \u201cAnticipate you may feel down if you\u2019ve lost someone recently, gone through a breakup, or are away from family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Journaling is a good self-care practice for expressing and connecting with emotions.<\/p>\n<p>Since the holidays go hand in hand with cocktails,\u00a0drink mindfully\u00a0and notice when celebratory sips are becoming tequila shots to drown emotions.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re starting to feel down, \u201cthen early intervention is key,\u201d Issa says. \u201cOnline therapy is a great option and more accessible than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>3. Stimulate Your Mind<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cSelf-soothe using the five senses: Get in your comfiest sweater or snuggle under a blanket, burn your favorite scented candle, eat or drink something soothing like herbal tea, look at artwork or pretty landscapes online, and listen to music that comforts you or is uplifting,\u201d Issa says.<\/p>\n<p>Intellectual activities can also boost your mood. Reading a book or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6174231\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">working on a jigsaw puzzle<\/a>\u00a0are mental workouts that activate your brain.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Support Your Spirit<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cGive yourself the gift of reducing stress for 10 minutes a day with a simple seated\u00a0meditation\u00a0practice,\u00a0pranayama\u00a0breathwork, or a loving-kindness meditation,\u201d Fuller says. \u201cA\u00a0gratitude\u00a0practice can help remind us to be grateful for all that we do have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConnecting with nature is also very helpful,\u201d she says. \u201cGet out and go for a walk.\u201d\u00a0Walking has a ton of benefits\u00a0but requires little gear.<\/p>\n<h2>5. Connect With People You Love<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-152524 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/01131526\/holiday-stress-pandemic-loved-ones.png\" alt=\"smiling woman on video call | holiday stress tips\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAround this time of year, comparing yourself to others on social media could create stress and anxiety,\u201d Fuller says.\u00a0Take breaks from social media\u00a0when you need them, but keep a balance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re feeling disconnected, reach out to friends and family or participate in virtual community groups,\u201d she says. You can also volunteer, recommends Issa. \u201cGiving back can help you boost your mood and feel connected to others.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>6. Create a Happy Place<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cYour environment is the ultimate foundation for your well-being and a representation of how we feel inside and out,\u201d says Rashia Bell, an interior designer and co-founder of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thecristalline.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Cristalline<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Infuse your home with feel-good holiday vibes. \u201cI love using essential oils in a diffuser, like cardamom or cinnamon, peppermint or spruce, to set a holiday tone,\u201d Bell says, who specializes in creating spaces that reflect the energy you want to attract. \u201cLighting is a huge factor, and candles always create a cozy environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Use a few pillar candles to make a faux fireplace in a small space or decorate with anything that makes you feel cheerful.<\/p>\n<h2>7. Find Work-Life Balance<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-152525 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/01131549\/holiday-stress-pandemic-work-balance.png\" alt=\"father working while holding son | holiday stress tips\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnow your boundaries and stick to them,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychpoint.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GinaMarie Guarino<\/a>, a licensed mental health counselor. \u201cPrioritize what is most important to you, and allow yourself to say no or set limits with others, so you are not left feeling stressed and overwhelmed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Take \u201cmini holidays\u201d or breaks each day and make time to celebrate without the pressures of work.<\/p>\n<h2>8. Do an Honest Financial Checkup<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cLet go of your expectations of who you used to be, or what you used to do this time of year, and be present in what\u2019s going on without having unrealistic expectations,\u201d Fuller says.<\/p>\n<p>Holiday shopping can add financial stress.
