Many of them have serious long-term health consequences.<\/p>\n<p>Wondering what can stress do to your body?<\/p>\n<p>Here are just a few examples of how stress affects the body:<\/p>\n<h2>1. Weight Gain<\/h2>\n<p>When you\u2019re stressed, it can be harder to maintain a healthy weight.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweightlosstherapist.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Candice Seti<\/a>, PsyD, CPT, cites cortisol, the stress hormone responsible for our \u201cfight or flight\u201d response, as the culprit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem with this increase in cortisol is that it often causes an associated increase in appetite,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen cortisol is released, it stimulates the part of the emotional center of the brain, which causes pleasurable activities, such as eating food, to become even more pleasurable. It is this idea of eating becoming more pleasurable that can make it that much easier to overeat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other words, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/ways-to-reduce-stress-with-nutrition?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stress eating<\/a>\u201d is a real phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-134442 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/What-Can-Stress-Do-to-Your-Body.sleep_.600.jpg\" alt=\"Man lying face down in bed sleeping.\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>2. Poor Sleep<\/h2>\n<p>Who hasn\u2019t stared at the ceiling at night, thinking about something stressful? Stress and sleep are definitely connected.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4266573\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A 2014 systematic review<\/a>\u00a0reported that experiencing stress led to less REM sleep, less efficient sleep, and more wake-ups during the night, though they said more research into the impact and causes were necessary.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/jsr.12710\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research<\/a>\u00a0published in 2018 indicates that some people are biologically prone to insomnia, and stress can trigger sleep disturbances.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Stiff Muscles<\/h2>\n<p>The stiff neck and sore shoulders you feel at the end of a stressful week?<\/p>\n<p>These\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4795524\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">muscle aches<\/a>\u00a0are examples of what stress can do to your body.<\/p>\n<p>When danger is imminent, our muscles tense up as we brace for impact; it\u2019s an important part of the fight or flight response.<\/p>\n<p>But constantly bracing, clenching, and tensing (whether in response to a predator or a looming deadline) can lead to muscle pain, as the muscles do not have the opportunity to fully relax.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>4. Immune System<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s no coincidence that when you\u2019re stressed you tend to catch every cold, bug, and flu that\u2019s circulating.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-3-030-16996-1_6#Abs1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research<\/a>\u00a0shows that stress can disturb the delicate balance between the central nervous system, the endocrine system, and the immune system.<\/p>\n<p>This effect of stress on the body just adds insult to injury \u2014 not only do you have to navigate a stressful situation, but you have to do it with the sniffles.<\/p>\n<h2>5. Gastrointestinal Issues<\/h2>\n<p>According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/helpcenter\/stress\/effects-gastrointestinal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Psychological Association<\/a>, the gut and the brain are in constant communication via hundreds of millions of neurons.<\/p>\n<p>This is why you can \u201cfeel\u201d excitement, worry, or dread in your stomach.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22314561\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stress can not only cause stomach pain and discomfort<\/a>, but it can also alter the gut\u2019s bacteria, which can impact the brain and influence your mood.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8351 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/What-Can-Stress-Do-to-Your-Body.600.jpg\" alt=\"What Stress Can Do to Your Body\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/What-Can-Stress-Do-to-Your-Body.600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/What-Can-Stress-Do-to-Your-Body.600-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>6. Mood<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cExperiencing chronic stress is not only harmful physically,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.neuroandcounselingcenter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amanda Levison<\/a>, M.S., LMHC, LPC, CCBT.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can take its toll mentally and emotionally. It can cause\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/signs-of-anxiety?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anxiety<\/a>, sadness, depression, anger, a lack of focus and motivation, and feelings of being overwhelmed.<\/p>\n<p>More serious than just feeling down or worried, these psychological effects of stress on the body can be disruptive to your everyday life and should be addressed by a mental health professional.<\/p>\n<p>Talk to your health-care provider if you feel like stress is interfering with your life.<\/p>\n<h2>3 Ways to Manage Stress<\/h2>\n<p>Considering what stress can do to your body, it\u2019s worth learning how to best manage it. Seti recommends a three-part strategy.<\/p>\n<h3>Exercise<\/h3>\n<p>Exercise (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18787373\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">particularly at moderate levels<\/a>) can offset stress by reducing cortisol levels while boosting levels of feel-good hormones, including endorphins and serotonin.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, physical activity can help distract you from the source of your stress.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t have time for an official workout, a quick walk around your neighborhood can do the trick.<\/p>\n<p>You might also try\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/9-week-control-freak?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">9 Week Control Freak<\/a>, a workout program from Super Trainer Autumn Calabrese that includes nightly stretches to help optimize recovery and enhance mental well-being.<\/p>\n<h3>Meditation<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cMeditation is a wonderful stress management tool as it calms both the body and mind simultaneously,\u201d Seti says.<\/p>\n<p>To help counteract the effects of stress on the body, she recommends starting with a guided meditation program, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/programs\/unstress-21-days-of-meditation-for-relaxation-calm-and-less-anxiety\/start-here?ICID_BLOG_UNSTRESS&amp;amp&amp;referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unstress<\/a>: 21 Days of Meditation for Relaxation, Calm, and Less Anxiety.<\/p>\n<h3>Sleep<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cGetting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/bedroom-changes-better-sleep?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">solid quality sleep<\/a>\u00a0can help ensure your body\u2019s resources are replenished to help you fight stress,\u201d Seti says.<\/p>\n<p>She recommends sticking to a consistent sleep schedule and avoiding common sleep disruptors \u2014 including caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, and screens \u2014 before bedtime.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Once you experience what stress can do to your body when it is chronic and prolonged, managing it no longer seems optional.
