Between busy work weeks, happy hours, and a general <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/how-to-motivate-yourself-to-work-out?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lack of exercise motivation<\/a>, it\u2019s easy to find reasons to skip a workout\u2026 but that can lead to a vicious cycle. \u201cThe more we don\u2019t [exercise] and the less fit we become, the worse it feels to work out,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abigaillufkin.com\/\">Abigail Lufkin<\/a>, a clinical therapist and sports psychology consultant in Santa Monica, California. And once you get it in your head that you hate working out, it\u2019s hard view exercise as anything other than a punishment.<\/div>\n<div class=\"entry__content entry-content\">\n<p>To begin shifting your mindset, nail down what\u2019s motivating you to exercise. \u201cIs it to lose weight, to feel better, to feel stronger, to be healthier? Find the thing that drives you to even\u00a0<em data-redactor-tag=\"em\">consider<\/em>\u00a0exercising and focus on that,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re struggling to come up with a definitive reason, Lufkin suggests setting a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/how-smart-goals-will-help-you-keep-your-resolutions?referringrepid=1393\">SMART goal<\/a>, which stands for\u00a0<strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">S<\/strong>pecific,\u00a0<strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">M<\/strong>easurable,\u00a0<strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">A<\/strong>ttainable,<strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">\u00a0R<\/strong>elevant,\u00a0<strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">T<\/strong>ime-Bound. SMART goals help make the task of getting fit less daunting by breaking it down into smaller, actionable pieces and giving you a clear vision of why you\u2019re doing what you\u2019re doing. When you have the right kind of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/shaun-t-tips-for-fitness-results?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exercise motivation,<\/a>\u00a0staying committed to working out \u2014 and actually enjoying it \u2014 is possible.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a rundown of some of the most common reasons people hate working out, and how to overcome them to increase your exercise motivation.<\/p>\n<h2>Why You Don\u2019t Like Working Out and How to\u00a0Improve Exercise Motivation<\/h2>\n<h3><strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">Why you hate it:\u00a0<\/strong>It\u2019s boring.<\/h3>\n<p><strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">Solution:<\/strong>\u00a0For some people, there\u2019s nothing worse than running. Working out could be just what you need to have a productive end to your day.<\/p>\n<p>But if you just can\u2019t pick yourself up in the evening, pick a time of day to work out when you\u2019re typically more energized, and when you can work out consistently. That last part is key. As the saying goes, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/what-is-best-time-of-day-to-exercise?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the best time to work out<\/a>\u00a0is the time when you\u00a0<em data-redactor-tag=\"em\">will\u00a0<\/em>work out.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">Why you hate it:\u00a0<\/strong>You\u2019re afraid you\u2019re going to fail.<\/h3>\n<p><strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">Solution:\u00a0<\/strong>Sometimes it feels easier to avoid a task altogether than it is to risk falling short of your goal. If you never start trying to lose weight, then you can\u2019t fail at it, right?<\/p>\n<p>This is why SMART goals are key: They help you work toward something you can\u00a0<em data-redactor-tag=\"em\">actually<\/em>\u00a0achieve. \u201cIt\u2019s important to set small, attainable goals, and celebrate when you meet them,\u201d Lufkin says. Acknowledging your success can be a huge step forward in making the workout plan more enjoyable. When you hit a goal, treat yourself to something fun that aids your progress, like new workout clothes or a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/4-recovery-methods-that-feel-more-like-pampering?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">massage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Having a support system can also help you overcome a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/tips-to-overcome-your-fear-of-working-out?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fear of working out<\/a>. Instead of feeling like you\u2019re attacking a daunting task alone, a workout buddy or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beachbodyondemand.force.com\/community\/s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online community<\/a>\u00a0can give you the extra encouragement you need.<\/p>\n<h3><strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">Why you hate it:\u00a0<\/strong>You don\u2019t like getting sweaty.<\/h3>\n<p><strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">Solution:<\/strong>\u00a0If you can\u2019t work out before you prepare for your day, getting sweaty and ruining your hair and makeup can be a major deterrent to exercise. Unfortunately, to lose weight or gain strength, you\u2019ll need to put in some hard work and get sweaty at some point. To avoid having to redo your coiffure and curls, time your intense workouts to the beginning or end of your day.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, you don\u2019t have to subscribe to a gut-busting, sweat-inducing workout every single day. There are low-impact and low-intensity exercises that can give you a decent calorie burn without significant schvitzing. Try activities like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/what-is-hatha-yoga?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hatha yoga<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/pilates-how-to-strength?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pilates<\/a>, or even walking. Research suggests that you can gain major health benefits from a simple\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25539937\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">30-minute walking routine<\/a>. It\u2019s enough to get your heart rate up, but won\u2019t leave you soaked and smelly.<\/p>\n<p>If you really,\u00a0<em data-redactor-tag=\"em\">really<\/em>\u00a0hate the sticky feeling of sweat, head to the pool and try a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/must-do-swim-workouts?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">swim workout<\/a>. It will give you an intense, total-body cardio workout without having to feel sweat dripping down your face. Of course, you\u2019ll now have to contend with chlorine \u2014 and a shower will still be in your very near future.<\/p>\n<h3><strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">Why you hate it:\u00a0<\/strong>It takes up too much time.<\/h3>\n<p><strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">Solution:\u00a0<\/strong>Whether you have a demanding job, no childcare, or both, it can be a challenge to find time to exercise. To get over this hurdle, Lufkin recommends starting small, and making exercise a nonnegotiable must-do. \u201cStart with 15 minutes \u2014 anyone can find 15 minutes in their day \u2014 and schedule it like you would lunch with a friend [or a recurring business meeting],\u201d she says. In short, start treating exercise like a key part of your day instead of a perpetual afterthought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can even break up your workout if you aren\u2019t able to find a time to get everything done at once,\u201d Janiszewski adds. You might do half of it during lunch and the other half after work, for example. You don\u2019t have to work out for very long to notice a benefit (research shows that even\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0111489\">a few minutes of intense exercise per week can improve cardiovascular fitness<\/a>), but you do have to be consistent.<\/p>\n<h3><strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">Why you hate it:\u00a0<\/strong>You can\u2019t afford or don\u2019t want to pay for a gym membership.<\/h3>\n<p><strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">Solution:\u00a0<\/strong>Access to workout facilities and equipment can play a major role in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12471307\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sticking with a workout routine<\/a>. So why add extra obstacles like a gym membership or tons of gear into the mix when they\u2019re not necessary? \u201cThere are many workouts that don\u2019t require any equipment and can be done in a living room,\u201d Janiszewski says. Just look at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/plans\/offers_bod?referringrepid=1393&amp;utm_campaign=bod_article_links&amp;utm_content=default&amp;utm_medium=body_link&amp;utm_source=blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beachbody On Demand<\/a>\u2018s extensive exercise library, which includes more than 600 fat-blasting workouts that can be done in a six-foot-by-six-foot area \u2014 many of them (like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teambeachbody.com\/workout-routines\/core-de-force?ICID=BLOG_CDF&amp;referringrepid=1393&amp;refsource=Blog%09\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CORE DE FORCE<\/a>) requiring nothing more than your own bodyweight. Not only does working out at home save you the money of a gym membership, it also let\u2019s you exercise on your own time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-101702100427 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/10-Reasons-Why-You-Hate-Working-Out-in-post-2.jpg\" alt=\"Exercise Motivation \u2013 10 Reasons Why You Hate Working Out\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">Why you hate it:\u00a0<\/strong>It\u2019s embarrassing to work out in front of other people.<\/h3>\n<p><strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">Solution:\u00a0<\/strong>Exercise is supposed to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/using-yoga-for-stress-reduction?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">relieve stress<\/a>, not contribute to it. If you make yourself work out in an environment where you feel judged, it\u2019s likely you won\u2019t stick with it. \u201cChoose activities and places where you feel the most comfortable,\u201d Lufkin says. This is a big reason why\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/9-reasons-working-out-at-home-is-better?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at-home workouts<\/a>\u00a0are so appealing. Being able to exercise in the privacy of your own living room removes the fear of being judged by others. It also allows you to slow down and learn new exercises at your own pace, instead of feeling pressured to do it right the first time.<\/p>\n<h3><strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">Why you hate it:\u00a0<\/strong>You\u2019re\u00a0<i data-redactor-tag=\"i\">really<\/i>\u00a0out of shape.<\/h3>\n<p><strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">Solution:\u00a0<\/strong>The first few days or weeks of a new exercise program are often the hardest. Even when you do muster the energy to work out, new moves often leave you feeling tired and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/why-do-muscles-get-sore-after-exercise?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sore in places you didn\u2019t even know existed<\/a>. To avoid this, take steps to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/5-tips-avoid-muscle-soreness?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prevent muscle soreness<\/a>\u00a0so you don\u2019t get discouraged. Start slowly, and gradually increase your effort and intensity based on how you feel after each successive workout.<\/p>\n<p>What you eat after working out can also optimize your recovery and help prevent soreness.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teambeachbody.com\/shop\/-\/shopping\/BBPRecover?ICID=BLOG_RR&amp;referringrepid=1393&amp;refsource=Blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beachbody Performance Recover<\/a>\u00a0is made with 20 grams of protein to aid muscle repair and growth, and it contains pomegranate extract, which has been shown to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19952825\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reduce muscle soreness<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Janiszewski emphasizes the importance of listening to your body and scheduling\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/recovery-done-right-8-ways-prevent-muscle-soreness?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rest and recovery<\/a>\u00a0days when needed. \u201cAllowing time to recover after exercise is extremely important,\u201d she says. \u201cFor example, if you do a heavy leg day, allow [those muscles] two days to fully recover.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"height-spacer height-spacer-1\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">Why you hate it:\u00a0<\/strong>It\u2019s all just too overwhelming.<\/h3>\n<p><strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">Solution:\u00a0<\/strong>The sheer volume of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/conflicting-opinions-in-fitness?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fitness advice<\/a>\u00a0out in the world can be incredibly intimidating. That\u2019s why it\u2019s vital to not overcomplicate the process of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/how-to-get-started-with-fitness?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">getting started<\/a>. \u201cTune into yourself and what you want. Think about what sounds like fun and give it a try. If possible, find a friend to do it with,\u201d said Lufkin. \u201cMost importantly, just do\u00a0<em data-redactor-tag=\"em\">something\u00a0<\/em>\u2014 a walk around the block is better than no walk at all.
