They help our bodies send and receive instructions to contract and release muscles, and they may potentially\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31350753\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reduce cramping<\/a>\u00a0in tired muscles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Research is limited, so more studies are needed to conclude that electrolytes can help with cramping.*<\/p>\n<h2>Why Are Electrolytes Important for Hydration?<\/h2>\n<p>When we sweat, electrolytes help keep the water balanced inside and outside cells so that your muscles and organs can continue to function properly.*<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sodium<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We lose electrolytes, especially sodium, in perspiration \u2014 that\u2019s why sweat tastes salty. \u201cSweating a lot \u2014 as we do during hot weather or intense exercise \u2014 can lead to dehydration, including a deficit of crucial electrolytes,\u201d says Julom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Potassium<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/foodlove.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bansari Acharya, MA, RDN<\/a>, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Detroit, notes that potassium is important for muscle function and strength. Low potassium levels can lead to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/1656509\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fatigue and weakness<\/a>.*<\/p>\n<p><strong>Magnesium<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Magnesium helps the body retain potassium, Acharya adds.
