But there are only a few cultures whose diet is believed to extend their longevity \u2014 the Blue Zones diet.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the eating habits and lifestyles of peoples living in classified \u201cblue zones,\u201d the Blue Zones diet \u2014 encompassing nine behavioral factors of which consumption is only three \u2014 boasts the means to add years to your lifespan. Unlike many other diets, however, this approach to eating isn\u2019t a precise list of must-haves and never-eats.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, individuals in these various Blue Zones don\u2019t consume identical diets. What they do share are dietary commonalities that may help them to live longer lives. Curious how?<\/p>\n<h2>What Is the Blue Zones Diet?<a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/10102846\/blue-zones-diet-600-circles.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-167523 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/10102846\/blue-zones-diet-600-circles.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>The Blue Zones diet is based on the eating habits of five unique communities around the globe with impressive lifespans. These \u201cblue zones\u201d were first described in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluezones.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Nat_Geo_LongevityF.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2005 National Geographic article<\/a>\u00a0by Dan Buettner. He eventually went on to author the New York Times-bestseller\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2MZvMOx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Blue Zones<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6125071\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buettner\u2019s work<\/a>\u00a0expanded on longevity studies by researchers Gianni Pes and Michel Poulain. They examined which areas of the world had the largest numbers of centenarians (people who lived 100 years or more).<\/p>\n<p>During their research, Pes and Poulain drew blue circles on a map around the areas with the highest concentrations. These became the Blue Zones.<\/p>\n<p>Together, Buettner, Pes, and Poulain designated five key locations around the world that share common characteristics that lead to improved longevity.<\/p>\n<h2>What Are the Five Blue Zones?<\/h2>\n<p>So just where are the Blue Zones? You might be surprised to find out just how diffuse and unique these locations are.<\/p>\n<p>From a rocky Mediterranean island to a lush Costa Rican peninsula to an inland community in Southern California, the Blue Zones are as diverse as they are geographically dispersed.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sardinia, Italy<\/strong>: The mountainous province of Ogliastra boasts\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluezones.com\/explorations\/sardinia-italy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">10 times more centenarians<\/a>\u00a0per capita than the U.S. and, perhaps even more interestingly, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/51844743_A_Population_Where_Men_Live_As_Long_As_Women_Villagrande_Strisaili_Sardinia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">men live as long<\/a>\u00a0as the women.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ikaria, Greece:<\/strong>\u00a0One in every three inhabitants of this Greek island\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/travel\/story\/20171116-the-greek-island-with-the-key-to-longevity\">makes it to their ninth decade<\/a>. The proportion of the U.S. population that lives to see 90? About\u00a0half a percent.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Okinawa, Japan<\/strong>: Those living on this Japanese island have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-2001-nov-18-mn-5410-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">80 percent fewer heart attacks<\/a>\u00a0than Americans, as well as lower rates of heart disease, cancer, and dementia.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Loma Linda, California<\/strong>: This inland community of Seventh Day Adventists counts some of the longest-living people in North America among its members, who often outlive their counterparts\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/health\/la-he-blue-zone-loma-linda-20150711-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">by a decade or more<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica<\/strong>: On the Central American nation\u2019s Pacific coast, the Nicoya Peninsula boasts the world\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2822182\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lowest rates<\/a>\u00a0of middle-age mortality and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/books\/features\/5-blue-zones-where-the-worlds-healthiest-people-live\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">second highest concentration<\/a> of men who live to 100.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What Do People in Blue Zones Eat?<\/h2>\n<p>Perhaps most surprising about the Blue Zones diet is that those living in blue zones don\u2019t eat identically. Okinawans avoid almost all dairy, while it makes up almost a quarter of the Nicoyan diet.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/whole-wheat-vs-whole-grain?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Whole grains<\/a>\u00a0comprise nearly half of Sardinians\u2019 intake, while fruits and vegetables represent 50 percent of Seventh-Day Adventists\u2019 regimen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile they do have some differences, it\u2019s what they all have in common that we believe can move the needle for long term health,\u201d explains Buettner. Despite their variety, Buettner found the diets of those in the Blue Zones share 11 key commonalities. Here are five of the biggest.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Mostly plants<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/10103825\/blue-zones-diet-600-plants.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-167525 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/10103825\/blue-zones-diet-600-plants.jpg\" alt=\"vegetables in market | Blue Zones Diet\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAcross the board, the longest-lived people in the world are getting over 90 percent of their calories from whole plant foods,\u201d says Buettner. For people in the Blue Zones, their diets consist of a majority of fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes \u2014 upwards of 95 percent for some communities.<\/p>\n<p>This stands in contrast to the traditional American diet in which 27 percent of calories consumed come from animals. More alarming, 37 percent of that diet consists of sugar and fat, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/what-the-world-eats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Geographic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking for the biggest blue zone bang for your buck, start here, suggests Buettner. \u201cIf you\u2019re eating mostly plants, you\u2019ll be filling your plate and your body with nutrient-dense foods and pushing other\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/ultra-processed-foods?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">processed foods<\/a>\u00a0out of your lifestyle.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>2. The whole food<\/h3>\n<p>The term gets thrown around so freely you could be excused for no longer knowing what it means to eat \u201cwhole foods.\u201d Simply stated, denizens in blue zones eat single-ingredient, naturally occurring foods in their entirety.<\/p>\n<p>Not components of foods broken down industrially. Not Cliff Notes versions of foods that skip to their tastiest parts (e.g. separating juice from pulp).<\/p>\n<p>If it\u2019s a grain, eat the germ and the bran, rather than a bleached, refined flour derived from what\u2019s left. If it\u2019s a vegetable, eat all that\u2019s edible, rather than skinning, peeling, or consuming the fried-chip version of it. If it\u2019s fruit, eat it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/is-dried-fruit-healthy?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">un-dried<\/a>\u00a0and un-juiced to enjoy all of its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/benefits-of-fruits-and-vegetables?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">benefits<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Beans<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/10103830\/blue-zones-diet-600-beans.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-167526 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/10103830\/blue-zones-diet-600-beans.jpg\" alt=\"jars of beans | Blue Zones Diet\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another longevity powerhouse among blue zone eaters is legumes. Most inhabitants living in blue zones consume \u00bd to 1 cup of beans per day, says Buettner. They\u2019re not only inexpensive and easy to preserve, but also offer a good balance of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/what-is-protein?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">protein\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/simple-carbohydrates-complex-carbohydrates?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">complex carbohydrates<\/a>\u00a0while being\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/dietary-fiber?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">high in fiber<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Black beans\u2026 white beans\u2026 lentils\u2026 garbanzos\u2026 While each blue zone region may consume different types of beans, they each have their own unique culinary traditions to make them taste good, says Buettner.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Water<\/h3>\n<p>Soda is not a healthy hydrator. Neither are energy drinks, milk shakes, or purple fluid in foil-top plastic barrels, which is why Buettner says most blue zone centenarians have never even heard of them.<\/p>\n<p>Exceptions for blue zoners include coffee, tea, and the occasional glass of wine, all of which can be prepared naturally \u2014 and even deliver\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/9-guilty-pleasures-that-are-actually-good-for-you?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">benefits of their own<\/a>. Water is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/4-telltale-signs-of-dehydration?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">essential for nearly every biological process<\/a>, so you might as well consume it uncut.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Nuts<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/10103835\/blue-zones-diet-600-nuts.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-167527 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/10103835\/blue-zones-diet-600-nuts.jpg\" alt=\"opening jar of nuts | Blue Zones Diet\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you need a snack, choose nuts. According to Buettner\u2019s research, blue zoners eat about four ounces of them per day \u2014 about the size of two complete handfuls.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/publichealth.llu.edu\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adventist Health Study<\/a>\u00a0found that nut eaters\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/adventisthealthstudy.org\/studies\/AHS-1\/findings-nuts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">live longer and have fewer heart problems<\/a>. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ije\/article-abstract\/47\/5\/1603\/4924399\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study<\/a>\u00a0found that Adventists who noshed on nuts at least five days a week lived on average\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluezones.com\/exploration\/loma-linda-california\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">two years longer<\/a>\u00a0than their nut-eschewing counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>And the specific nut isn\u2019t the secret; Nicoyans prefer pistachios while Ikarians opt for almonds. Your best blue zones diet option? Consume a wide range of nuts, which can provide a variety of important nutrients including protein,\u00a0vitamin E, selenium and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/foods-high-in-magnesium?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">magnesium<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You can see the rest of the Blue Zones Diet food guidelines\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluezones.com\/recipes\/food-guidelines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Do People in Blue Zones Drink Alcohol?<\/h2>\n<p>While people in Blue Zones limit meat, dairy, and sweets, alcohol \u2014 especially red wine \u2014 is a key daily component for many.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople in four original blue zones areas drink alcohol moderately and regularly,\u201d explains Buettner. \u201cThe trick is to drink one to two glasses per day with friends and\/or with food; not an all-out binge on Saturday night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also important to note that those aren\u2019t 32-ounce Big Gulps of red wine, rather servings of three to four ounces each. Cannonau wine from Sardinia (known elsewhere as Grenache or Garnacha) is especially beneficial.<\/p>\n<p>Compared with other wines,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1021\/jf960705d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research<\/a>\u00a0has shown that it contains two or three times the level of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/what-are-phytonutrients?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">flavonoids<\/a>, which pack a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory punch.<\/p>\n<p>While research on the benefits of moderate drinking has been mixed, recent studies suggest that moderate alcohol consumption (give an amount, i.e. one glass\/day for women two for men) may increase your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/10408398.2012.747484\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">longevity<\/a>\u00a0and could possibly help to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5939941\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">maintain cognitive health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Do People in Blue Zones Drink Coffee?<a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/16102613\/blue-zone-diet-600-coffee.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-164000 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/16102613\/blue-zone-diet-600-coffee.jpg\" alt=\"Cup of Coffee | Blue Zones Diet\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Along with water, tea, and wine, coffee is a staple beverage for those living in blue zones. \u201cCoffee is a daily ritual in most blue zones areas,\u201d Buettner says. \u201cMost centenarians drink up to two or three cups of black coffee per day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/full\/10.1161\/CIRCULATIONAHA.113.005925\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Studies<\/a>\u00a0have found that moderate coffee consumption promotes heart health. Other\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29474816\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">studies<\/a>\u00a0suggest that a few cups of joe a day can positively impact blood sugar, depression, and obesity.<\/p>\n<p>However, the way coffee is consumed in blue zones may be key to its benefits. There, it\u2019s usually enjoyed black or lightly sweetened.<\/p>\n<h2>Other Traits of Those Who Live In Blue Zones<\/h2>\n<p>The benefits enjoyed in Blue Zones aren\u2019t attributable solely to diet. Along with a team of medical researchers, anthropologists, demographers, and epidemiologists, Buettner found nine key factors that have the biggest impact on lifespan.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Regular physical activity<\/li>\n<li>A sense of purpose<\/li>\n<li>Minimal daily stress<\/li>\n<li>Moderate caloric intake<\/li>\n<li>A mostly plant-based diet<\/li>\n<li>Alcohol in moderation<\/li>\n<li>Spirituality or religion<\/li>\n<li>Emphasis on family<\/li>\n<li>Robust social life<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It\u2019s important to remember that diet is just one element of the Blue Zones\u2019\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluezones.com\/2016\/11\/power-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Power 9<\/a>, as Buettner calls them. And while diet is key, says clinical nutritionist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jacquijustice.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jacqui Justice<\/a>, M.S., C.N.S., there aren\u2019t enough leafy greens and beans you can eat to overcome the modern-day stresses plaguing many people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you look at the Blue Zones Diet, lifestyle is definitely a key element,\u201d she says. \u201cSure, almost every single dietitian, nutritionist, and wellness doctor would agree that most people need more veggies. But stress is also a tremendous aspect for most people. \u201d<\/p>\n<p>Buettner agrees. \u201cWhile diet and exercise are important, if you\u2019re stressed, lonely, or aimless, you may have a hard time reaching your 100th birthday,\u201d he says. Stress in particular causes inflammation in your body, which is endemic in almost every age-related disease.<\/p>\n<p>So eat more fruits and veggies. Add some beans to your diet. But also look for ways to decrease your daily stress, be physically active, and connect more with family and friends.
