You\u2019re probably not going to feel amazing, and, down the line, it could take a toll on your well-being.<\/p>\n<p>The benefits of deep sleep are mental and physical. Sleep helps our muscles and minds recover and supports healthy weight, your immune system, and clear thinking, among other benefits, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/health.gov\/myhealthfinder\/topics\/everyday-healthy-living\/mental-health-and-relationships\/get-enough-sleep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Department of Health and Human Services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>What Are the Stages of Sleep?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/10140531\/How-to-Get-More-Sleep.600.gfx_.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-156755 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/10140531\/How-to-Get-More-Sleep.600.gfx_.png\" alt=\"4 stages of sleep\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When we sleep, our body cycles through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ninds.nih.gov\/Disorders\/Patient-Caregiver-Education\/Understanding-Sleep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two types of sleep marked by different brain waves<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Non-rapid-eye movement sleep (NREM)<\/li>\n<li>Rapid-eye movement sleep (REM)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Throughout the night, you\u2019ll have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK526132\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">four to six 90-minute sleep cycles<\/a>. Within each cycle, there are three stages of NREM sleep and a final period of REM sleep.<\/p>\n<p>A sleep cycle consists of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stage 1 NREM sleep<\/strong>: This is a short period of light sleep, usually a few minutes, when your body switches into sleep mode.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stage 2 NREM sleep<\/strong>: A period of light sleep moving toward deep sleep when your heartbeat and breathing slow down, muscles relax, body temperature drops, and eye movements stop.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stage 3 NREM sleep<\/strong>: This is the period of deep sleep you need to really feel rested.<\/li>\n<li><strong>REM sleep<\/strong>: This happens around the 90-minute mark, and your brain wave activity picks up your eyes move, your breathing speeds up again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Within these periods of sleep, the length of time also changes.<\/p>\n<p>During the first half of the night, Stage 3 NREM or deep sleep occurs in more extended periods. As you get closer to morning, your REM phases get longer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is speculated that NREM deep sleep has a greater restorative function,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/profiles\/results\/directory\/profile\/0004568\/david-neubauer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. David Neubauer<\/a>, M.D., a psychiatrist and sleep specialist at Johns Hopkins Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>But research is still evolving on REM and NREM sleep.<\/p>\n<h2>Tips for Better Sleep<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cSomeone can lay in bed for 10 hours per night, but only sleep for five,\u201d explains Dr. Khurshid A. Khurshid, M.D.<\/p>\n<p>Broken sleep often becomes a vicious cycle, requiring retraining your body. Here are a few ways to help prime your body for better sleep.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Exercise at optimal times for sleep<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/10140813\/How-to-Get-More-Sleep.600.exercise.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-156757 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/10140813\/How-to-Get-More-Sleep.600.exercise.png\" alt=\"Woman putting running shoes on\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Working out can help you sleep better, but exercising too close to bedtime reduces your ability to sleep deeply because it triggers hormones that energize us.<\/p>\n<p>Morning, afternoon, and early evenings are your best bets for working out, recommends Khurshid.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Set yourself up for success<\/h3>\n<p>If you struggle to sleep, there are products like sleep masks and blackout curtains\u00a0designed to help you get more Zs.<\/p>\n<p>Finding the right mattress is also a crucial element to getting better sleep.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of mattress feels comfortable to you is personal, but choose one that meets your support needs,\u201d says Khurshid.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Have an early dinner<\/h3>\n<p>Give your body plenty of time to digest before bedtime because digestion can disrupt sleep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6381712\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Studies<\/a>\u00a0suggest there may be a link between sleep disturbances and digestive issues.<\/p>\n<h3>4.
