Determine your goal<\/h2>\n<p>The first step in identifying a good new year resolution or goal is to consider what\u2019s important in your life.<\/p>\n<p>Dietitian\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thrivenutritioncounseling.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Julie Feldman<\/a>, M.P.H., R.D.N., says focusing on your values can be the best place to start.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like to help my clients establish five core values that they focus on as they set their goals for themselves,\u201d Feldman explains.<\/p>\n<p>Sit down and ask yourself what\u2019s important to you: Eating healthier? Getting fit? Stress relief? Sleep? Your career? Or maybe a combination?<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no wrong answer, but only you know what you need.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Start with small steps<\/h2>\n<p>Once you have a new year resolution in mind, the next step is to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/reach-your-goals?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">create a plan<\/a>\u00a0with small, actionable steps.<\/p>\n<p>Starting with a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/how-smart-goals-will-help-you-keep-your-resolutions?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SMART goal<\/a>\u00a0can definitely help you focus your resolution.\u00a0\u201cSetting realistic, choice-driven goals are my favorite,\u201d Feldman explains.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than setting a New Year\u2019s resolution to lose 20 pounds or \u201cget healthy,\u201d she suggests setting a goal for exercising a certain number of times per week or cooking at home on set nights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoals can seem really big and overwhelming,\u201d Feldman says. \u201cMy tip is to always break them down into single, simpler steps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She recommends planning one day (or one week) at a time, setting reminders in your phone, and adding small items to your life that encourage success: \u201cSimple things like buying a cookbook can be motivating for people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This way, your nutrition and fitness goals are predetermined, so you can focus on action rather than planning.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Promise to commit<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/How-to-Set-a-New-Year-Resolution.exercise.600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-134044 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/How-to-Set-a-New-Year-Resolution.exercise.600.jpg\" alt=\"Woman stretching with resistance band\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With small tasks planned out, the next step in achieving your goal is to make a promise to yourself.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also important to understand that the journey may include a few road bumps along the way.<\/p>\n<p>Committing to the process helps people recognize that \u201cthe path to a goal isn\u2019t necessarily a straight line,\u201d Feldman says.<\/p>\n<p>As you progress with your plan, tracking your progress (no matter how small ) can help you reaffirm that promise you made to yourself.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you add a sticker in your planner every time you meditate before bed, buy a water bottle designed to track your daily consumption, or log your workouts to see how many miles you\u2019ve walked since the year started.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Hold yourself accountable<\/h2>\n<p>A personal commitment is a key step in creating a successful New Year\u2019s resolution, but external accountability and sharing your goal are also clutch in cementing success.<\/p>\n<p>Try journaling, phone apps, and calendar reminders to help keep you accountable, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA great way to help with commitment and accountability is to verbalize your goal to another person,\u201d says mental health counselor\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kellyhousemancounseling.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kelly Houseman<\/a>, MS, LLPC. \u201cHaving someone to cheer you on and hold you accountable outside of yourself can be a huge boost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since we\u2019re all still staying socially distanced, sharing on social media is a great way to stay accountable, too.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/groups-about?ICID=BLOG_GROUPS&amp;referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BODgroups<\/a>\u00a0is a great accountability tool \u2014 on this community-based platform, you can track your fitness and nutrition activity and share your progress with your group.<\/p>\n<p>A BODgroup can help keep you accountable to your goals and can help you stay motivated throughout the year.<\/p>\n<h2>5. Celebrate your wins<\/h2>\n<p>No matter how small your \u201cwin,\u201d giving yourself a pat on the back can help reinforce your commitment to your New Year resolution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWins are so deeply emotional,\u201d Feldman says. Rewarding yourself with a new workout outfit or a pair of headphones, for example, can motivate you to keep working toward your big goal.<\/p>\n<p>Experiences (like sleeping in an extra hour or watching a favorite movie) are also good rewards that don\u2019t impact your budget.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so important to allow ourselves to be proud and feel accomplished each small win we have,\u201d Houseman says. \u201cLife can be overwhelming, so we can incorporate small changes that still make a big impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Setting goals for 2023 and sticking with them like a New Year resolution can be a challenge, but it doesn\u2019t have to be.
