{"id":6836,"date":"2022-05-30T14:30:50","date_gmt":"2022-05-30T20:30:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/?p=6836"},"modified":"2022-05-30T14:30:50","modified_gmt":"2022-05-30T20:30:50","slug":"healthy-weight-loss-habits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/2022\/05\/30\/healthy-weight-loss-habits\/","title":{"rendered":"Healthy Weight Loss Habits"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Healthy weight loss habits from a group of people out there that know the keys to losing weight and keeping it off.<\/p>\n<p>Lasting weight loss is about figuring out what works well in\u00a0<em>your<\/em>\u00a0life and making it into a habit.<\/p>\n<p>So who better to learn from than highly successful people who have lost 30 pounds or more and kept the weight off for at least a year?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6837\" src=\"https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/7-Healthy-Habits-of-People-Who-Lost-30-Pounds.HEADER.TEXT_-715x358-1.jpg\" alt=\"Healthy Weight Loss Habits\" width=\"715\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/7-Healthy-Habits-of-People-Who-Lost-30-Pounds.HEADER.TEXT_-715x358-1.jpg 715w, https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/7-Healthy-Habits-of-People-Who-Lost-30-Pounds.HEADER.TEXT_-715x358-1-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 715px) 100vw, 715px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Who\u00a0<i>Are<\/i>\u00a0These People?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The folks we\u2019re talking about are real people who did real work to shed pounds \u2014 and now they\u2019re willing participants in an ongoing research study that started in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>They lost the weight, kept it off for a year (or more), and then signed up for the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nwcr.ws\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Weight Control Registry<\/a>\u00a0(NWCR), which aims to be the largest study of long-term, successful weight-loss maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>The NWCR has registered 10,000 individuals since it began, and the average person in the registry has kept off 66 pounds for 5.5 years and counting.<\/p>\n<p>About half of them report having at least one overweight parent. Most are between the ages of 44 and 49, which could mean that it takes time to figure out just the right mix of diet and exercise habits.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s in it for participants? They get to help scientists figure out how people can escape the cycle of yo-yo dieting that so many struggle with.<\/p>\n<p>While each person\u2019s weight-loss journey is unique, there were seven common habits that worked for these weight-loss winners.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s where we think they got it right:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/7-Healthy-Habits-of-People-Who-Lost-30-Pounds.inpost2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10170293775 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/7-Healthy-Habits-of-People-Who-Lost-30-Pounds.inpost2.jpg\" alt=\"healthy habits, weight loss, 7 healthy habits to lose weight\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. They eat fewer calories than the average American<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Most of the registry participants ate a low-calorie diet \u2014 the average was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9550162?dopt=Abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1,306 calories for women and 1,685 calories for men<\/a>. For perspective, American women and men in their 40s eat an average of about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ars.usda.gov\/ARSUserFiles\/80400530\/pdf\/1314\/Table_41_DEN_GEN_13.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1,873 and 2,520 calories<\/a>, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health\/educational\/wecan\/healthy-weight-basics\/balance.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science behind eating fewer calories to lose weight<\/a>\u00a0is solid, but over the years, we\u2019ve learned that a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/what-are-calories-and-how-are-they-measured?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calorie is not a calorie<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>quality<\/em>\u00a0of those calories matters significantly. That\u2019s why 100 calories of fiber-filled apple slices can help you feel fuller longer than 100 calories of licorice.<\/p>\n<p>Counting calories is helpful, but turning it into a habit can be a challenge. Calories do count, but you don\u2019t always need to count them.<\/p>\n<p>You can achieve similar results (with less math) by learning how to control portion sizes.<\/p>\n<p>Something as simple as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teambeachbody.com\/shop\/-\/shopping\/BBPortionFix?ICID=BLOG_PORTIONFIXPGM&amp;referringrepid=1393&amp;refsource=Blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">portion containers<\/a>\u00a0can help you determine the right amount of food (read: calories) for your body.<\/p>\n<p>And don\u2019t forget about calorie quality: Aim for a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teambeachbody.com\/workout-routines\/21-day-fix-workout?ICID=BLOG_21DF&amp;referringrepid=1393&amp;refsource=Blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">balanced nutrition plan\u00a0<\/a>that includes plenty of fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/7-Healthy-Habits-of-People-Who-Lost-30-Pounds.iStock.inpost3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10170293778 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/7-Healthy-Habits-of-People-Who-Lost-30-Pounds.iStock.inpost3.jpg\" alt=\"weight loss, losing weight, healthy habits\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. They eat often, up to five times a day<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The registry participants eat more frequently than people who are overweight. They generally eat\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3202697\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">five times daily<\/a>, which breaks out to three meals and two snacks.<\/p>\n<p>Science has a tough time making the final call on whether or not eating more often will\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jn.nutrition.org\/content\/141\/1\/154.full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hurt or help your progress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sure,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/how-often-should-you-eat?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eating often<\/a>\u00a0can mean more opportunities to overeat, but it\u2019s also a good strategy to deal with hunger.<\/p>\n<p>Grazing on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/snacks-150-calories?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">healthy snacks<\/a>\u00a0like fresh fruits, veggies, string cheese, and Greek yogurt is a no-brainer. Just remember that there\u2019s a fine line between a snack and a full-blown meal.<\/p>\n<div class=\"height-spacer height-spacer-1\"><\/div>\n<h2><strong>3. They stick to a consistent diet<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div class=\"height-spacer height-spacer-1\"><\/div>\n<p>Most registry participants eat a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ajcn.nutrition.org\/content\/82\/1\/222S.long\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fairly consistent diet<\/a>\u00a0whether it\u2019s a weekday, weekend, holiday, or vacation.<\/p>\n<p>Results show that those who ate a consistent diet the entire week were 1.5 times more likely to maintain their weight within five pounds over the course of one year compared with those who ate a healthy diet strictly on weekdays.<\/p>\n<p>While there\u2019s not a ton of research in this area, this habit makes sense. Eating the same foods every day can help with self-control and keep unplanned temptations to a minimum.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind it\u2019s perfectly OK to indulge in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/ask-expert-cheat-meals-ok?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cheat meal<\/a>\u00a0once in a while, but keep it to that: once in a while.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>4. They don\u2019t skip breakfast<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A whopping\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nwcr.ws\/Research\/default.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">78 percent of those in the registry<\/a>\u00a0report eating breakfast every day, which is consistent with the trend that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/do-you-really-need-to-eat-breakfast-to-lose-weight?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">people who eat a morning meal usually weigh less<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bear in mind that skipping breakfast won\u2019t entirely make or break your weight-loss efforts. In fact, a small number of folks will skip this meal to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/ask-the-expert-should-i-try-intermittent-fasting?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lose weight through intermittent fasting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fasting isn\u2019t for everyone, so if that\u2019s not your cup of tea, keep calm, and join the breakfast club.<\/p>\n<p>A breakfast with a balance of protein, fat, and carbohydrates (high in fiber) \u2014 like two eggs scrambled with vegetables and maybe \u00bc of an avocado,\u00a0\u00bd\u00a0cup of oatmeal, and 1 cup of fruit \u2014 can set the tone for the rest of day.<\/p>\n<p>It may help cut down midmorning hunger and decrease the chances you\u2019ll be \u201changry\u201d by lunch.<\/p>\n<p>All this can build up to better food choices throughout the day, so you\u2019ll be able to breeze by your coworker\u2019s batch of brownies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/7-Healthy-Habits-of-People-Who-Lost-30-Pounds.iStock.inpost.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10170293773 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/7-Healthy-Habits-of-People-Who-Lost-30-Pounds.iStock.inpost.jpg\" alt=\"habits of healthy people, 7 habits of people who lost a lot of weight\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>5. They prioritize daily exercise<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Almost all (90 percent) registry participants exercise for about one hour every day. This habit is especially effective because\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teambeachbody.com\/bod-offer?ICID=BLOG_BOD&amp;referringrepid=1393&amp;refsource=Blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nutrition works hand in hand with exercise<\/a>\u00a0to promote weight loss.<\/p>\n<p>The most effective way to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jdmdonline.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s40200-015-0154-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">change your body composition<\/a>\u00a0is to add\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teambeachbody.com\/workout-routines\/body-beast-workout?ICID=BLOG_BEAST&amp;referringrepid=1393&amp;refsource=Blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strength training<\/a>\u00a0and\/or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teambeachbody.com\/workout-routines\/max30?ICID=BLOG_MAX30&amp;referringrepid=1393&amp;refsource=Blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high-intensity interval training<\/a>\u00a0(HIIT) to your workout routine.<\/p>\n<p>Besides helping you slip into that little black dress,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/5-benefits-of-exercise-you-havent-considered?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exercise benefits<\/a>\u00a0include improvements in sleep, mood, and productivity.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve been struggling to fit in a workout on your lunch hour or after work, consider working out in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/morning-meltdown-100?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Morning Meltdown 100<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/morning-meltdown-100-jericho-mcmatthews?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Super Trainer Jericho McMatthews<\/a>, the workouts are short enough to easily fit into your day and the schedule is flexible, so you can stay on track even when life gets in the way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWaking up and sweating means starting your day with an endorphin rush, which instantly\u00a0boosts your mood and sets a positive tone for the rest of your day,\u201d Jericho explains.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>6. They weigh in weekly<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The scale can feel like a constant reminder that your goal weight is far away. People dread weighing in mostly because they don\u2019t like the number they see.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, that\u2019s the opposite of what successful weight-loss maintainers do: 75 percent of registry participants weigh themselves at least once each week.<\/p>\n<p>This not only helps those with weight-loss success stories stay focused on their goals, but that number on the scale can also be the motivation to implement healthy habits in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>For the study participants, hitting an \u201call-time high in weight\u201d is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ajcn.nutrition.org\/content\/82\/1\/222S.long\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a common trigger<\/a>\u00a0for someone to want to lose weight.<\/p>\n<p>Frequent weighing also helps participants avoid the scale number creeping up on them without noticing.<\/p>\n<p>Weekly monitoring can catch a one- to two-pound weight gain, as opposed to monthly, where you could gain a much more significant amount.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a good idea to weigh in occasionally, but guilt-tripping yourself each time you step on a scale is a big no-no.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, think of that number as a valuable data point that can help you troubleshoot and plan for the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>7. They don\u2019t binge-watch TV<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re juggling work, friends, and family, you know time is precious \u2014 and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/the-crazy-busy-persons-guide-to-weight-loss?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">finding time for healthy habits<\/a>\u00a0can be a challenge.<\/p>\n<p>But unless you\u2019re doing burpees while binge-watching\u00a0<em>The Real Housewives of New York<\/em>, you\u2019re not making much progress when you\u2019re in front of the TV.<\/p>\n<p>And to add insult to injury, eating while watching TV can contribute to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/how-to-stop-mindless-eating?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weight gain through mindless eating<\/a>. This doesn\u2019t mean you have to give up TV to see success, but you should limit your screen time.<\/p>\n<p>Most registry participants watch less than 10 hours a week. By limiting screen time, they can make more time for other activities (hint: exercise).<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Bottom Line<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It would be nice to think that these people are privy to some super secret way to lose a lot of weight and keep it off.<\/p>\n<p>But the simple truth is that there is no secret; it takes hard work,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/maintain-weight-loss?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">consistency<\/a>, and patience to see results that last.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-105128\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/69850331-R2-7Habits-People-Who-Lost-30.jpg\" alt=\"Trying to lose weight?
