Then later comes, and we kick the can down the road until the last minute, \u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>It feels like we\u2019re pushing the anxiety away, but the task or responsibility is still there. It lingers. The dread builds rather than goes away.<\/p>\n<p>The more you procrastinate, the higher your stress level goes.<\/p>\n<p>We may procrastinate in all facets of our lives, whether it\u2019s finding the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/how-to-motivate-yourself-to-work-out?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">motivation to work out<\/a>, avoiding a difficult conversation with a partner, scrolling through social media instead of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/how-to-practice-mindfulness?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">practicing mindfulness<\/a>, or doing our taxes.<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s also important to note that there\u2019s a difference between procrastinating and legitimately\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/why-is-self-care-important?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">needing a break for some self-care<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/beachbody-blog\/uploads\/2021\/04\/How-to-Stop-Procrastinating.600.lists_.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-136491 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/beachbody-blog\/uploads\/2021\/04\/How-to-Stop-Procrastinating.600.lists_.jpg\" alt=\"How to stop procrastinating at home\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>The Different Types of Procrastinators<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThere are many different types of procrastinators,\u201d says Ficken.\u00a0But here are a few categories we tend to fit into (any of these sound familiar?):<\/p>\n<h3>The Over-Scheduler<\/h3>\n<p>You procrastinate by always being too busy doing \u201cother stuff\u201d to do anything on your very, very, very long list of Things To Do.<\/p>\n<h3>The Perfectionist<\/h3>\n<p>If it\u2019s not perfect, it will have to wait. \u201cI don\u2019t have time to clean my entire kitchen, so I\u2019m just gonna wait until I have enough time.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>The Avoider<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s\u00a0<em>plenty<\/em>\u00a0of time to get this done. I\u2019m just going to quickly do [insert something else that doesn\u2019t need to be done] \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>The Pressure Junkie<\/h3>\n<p>These procrastinators claim to do their \u201cbest work\u201d under the gun. (Hint: If you ever wrote a 10-page final term paper the night before it was due in college, this is you.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/beachbody-blog\/uploads\/2021\/04\/How-to-Stop-Procrastinating.600.pen_.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-136492 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/beachbody-blog\/uploads\/2021\/04\/How-to-Stop-Procrastinating.600.pen_.jpg\" alt=\"How to stop procrastinating at work\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Why Do We Procrastinate?<\/h2>\n<p>Often, we\u00a0<em>know<\/em>\u00a0what we need to do, but for reasons we can\u2019t quite explain, we just aren\u2019t doing it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe procrastinate because we\u2019re anxious about a negative outcome or we don\u2019t feel motivated,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.choosingtherapy.com\/alisha-powell\/\">Alisha Powell<\/a>, Ph.D., LCSW.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can also be a lack of confidence in our abilities and not wanting to let others down,\u201d she adds. \u201cProcrastination can be closely tied to anxiety because there\u2019s an underlying fear that we may not be able to complete the task or responsibility within the allotted time period. There can also be a fear of failure that can feel paralyzing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you need to learn how to stop procrastinating, here are a few tips:<\/p>\n<h2>1. Break big tasks into smaller jobs<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cInstead of seeing it as one big task, breaking it into smaller slivers can help you see a way through,\u201d recommends Ficken.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Start with the lightest lifts<\/h2>\n<p>Getting through the easiest things you need to do can put you back on track for ticking off your list \u2014 just make sure you aren\u2019t doing \u201cbusy work\u201d to avoid real work.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Set dates to get things done<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cSeeing it on your schedule can help make it more manageable, and having a visual can hold us accountable,\u201d says Ficken.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Enlist a friend or colleague<\/h2>\n<p>Having an accountability partner can help you stay motivated, explains Powell.<\/p>\n<h2>5.
