It\u2019s just easier to motivate yourself to work out, stick to a nutritious eating plan, and simply get out of bed when it\u2019s sunny and warm out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHistorically and evolutionarily, winter was a time when people hibernated, huddled together, and had limited movement,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/arts-sciences.buffalo.edu\/psychology\/faculty\/faculty-directory\/park.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lora Park<\/a>, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at the University at Buffalo.<\/p>\n<p>And even if it\u2019s not born into us, winter often presents challenges in getting out of the house and doing things that expend energy, she adds, whether that ice storm is preventing you from getting in five miles or meeting friends for a small (socially distanced) get-together.<\/p>\n<p>But whatever is sapping your momentum, you can change the script.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6110\" src=\"https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/How-to-Stay-Motivated-in-Cold-Weather.960-715x358-1.jpg\" alt=\"Stay Motivated All Winter Long\" width=\"715\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/How-to-Stay-Motivated-in-Cold-Weather.960-715x358-1.jpg 715w, https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/How-to-Stay-Motivated-in-Cold-Weather.960-715x358-1-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 715px) 100vw, 715px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>How to Stay Motivated All Winter to Work Out<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Dress the part<\/h3>\n<p>If the weather affects your motivation, invest in\u00a0cold weather exercise gear\u00a0that will help push you through the elements, says Cody Braun, CPT, Assistant Manager of Fitness at Beachbody.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Add joy to movement<\/h3>\n<p>Do something you enjoy either during your workout or right after, Park suggests.<\/p>\n<p>For example, you could watch Netflix while on the treadmill, listen to podcasts while walking, or call a friend\u00a0<em>after<\/em>\u00a0your\u00a0home HIIT session.<\/p>\n<p>This way you\u2019ll look forward to exercising.\u00a0\u201cResearch shows that when people receive a small reward for engaging in healthy behaviors, it leads to greater motivation,\u201d Park explains.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Build in accountability<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cTry signing up for some sort of physical event such as a race, obstacle course, or sports league,\u201d Braun suggests. \u201cBy planning an event, you are giving yourself a timeline to be physically and mentally prepared, which can help motivate you each day to stay active.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>4. Identify what you\u2019re missing<\/h3>\n<p>The three fundamental human needs are autonomy (feeling like we have a choice, rather than feeling pressured), competency, and relatedness, Park says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re burned out with a particular type of exercise, you may lack one or all of these,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>For autonomy, make sure you\u2019re choosing workouts you want to do, rather than those you feel you should do.<\/p>\n<p>For competency, choose workouts that challenge you (so you\u2019ll grow) but aren\u2019t too far above your fitness level.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/beachbody-blog\/uploads\/2020\/12\/How-to-Stay-Motivated-in-Cold-Weather.600.3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-133569 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/beachbody-blog\/uploads\/2020\/12\/How-to-Stay-Motivated-in-Cold-Weather.600.3.jpg\" alt=\"Woman cooking at home\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>How to Stay Motivated All Winter to Eat Healthy<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Try new recipes<\/h3>\n<p>Park suggests bookmarking\u00a0recipes online\u00a0or finding them on Pinterest (or in magazines and cookbooks).<\/p>\n<p>When you meal plan each week, pick healthy recipes that you would really like to make and that match your cooking skills.<\/p>\n<p>This trick gets to autonomy and competency, and when you actually want to eat a meal, you\u2019ll be more likely to stay on the healthy eating track, Park says.<\/p>\n<p>Be sure to choose recipes that utilize a variety of veggies and lean protein choices.<\/p>\n<p>Opt for whole-grain or whole-wheat bread or pasta when possible for added fiber. You can also choose bean-based pasta for extra protein and fiber compared to refined pastas.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Make it easy on yourself<\/h3>\n<p>Chop and cook vegetables\u00a0on the weekend to toss into meals during the week, so you have no excuse not to eat them.<\/p>\n<p>Or buy pre-washed, pre-cut produce.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/pnas\/early\/2017\/07\/18\/1706541114.full.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cResearch shows<\/a>\u00a0that if you spend money on saving time, it makes you happier,\u201d Park says.<\/p>\n<p>Choose a variety of easier meals for Monday through Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, you can practice making harder recipes.<\/p>\n<p>And don\u2019t forget snacks can be simplified (i.e., cut-up fruit and protein, like an apple and hard-boiled egg).<\/p>\n<h3>3. Cook with others<\/h3>\n<p>Meal time is often family time. Why not make the prep work quality family time, too? Be compassionate<\/h3>\n<p>Especially these days, remember that most people are inside and under a lot of stress and demands, Park says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTreat yourself with the kindness that you would treat a friend,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than saying you\u2019re a slob for eating an extra cupcake or that you\u2019re going to lose muscle because you didn\u2019t work out the last two days, tell yourself what you would tell a friend if they were in your shoes.<\/p>\n<p>It may seem cheesy at first, but keep doing this until you believe it.<\/p>\n<h3>2. See every day as a new day<\/h3>\n<p>If you had a big purchase in your future, like a car or house, you would save up money and make sacrifices in the here and now.<\/p>\n<p>Any big goal is similar: You take small actions \u2014 and make possible sacrifices \u2014 now to be a better you down the road.<\/p>\n<p>So think little and long-term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach day is a chance to move slowly but surely in the direction you want to.
