That\u2019s when your body runs out of carbs and stalls mid-workout.<\/p>\n<p>And, of course, you can also include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teambeachbody.com\/shop\/us\/d\/beachbody-performance-energize-BBPEnergizeAllFlavors?ICID=BLOG_AUTO&amp;referringrepid=1393&amp;refsource=Blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beachbody Performance Energize<\/a>\u00a0in your pre-workout routine.<\/p>\n<p>Each serving delivers beta-alanine, low-dose caffeine, and quercetin to help delay exercise-induced muscle fatigue so you can push harder and go longer.*<\/p>\n<h2>When to Eat Before a Workout<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cA good\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/best-pre-workout-snack?referringrepid=1393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pre-workout snack<\/a>\u00a0can be consumed 30 to 60 minutes before a workout,\u201d says Davis. She recommends eating mostly carbs and other foods that are easily digested before a workout. Now let\u2019s nail down your perfect timing.<\/p>\n<h3>Before A.M. workouts<\/h3>\n<p>You can usually eat breakfast after your workout. If you\u2019re working out first thing in the morning, you may not need a pre-workout snack or meal. (You also might not want to eat, especially if eating too early turns your stomach.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour body has stored glycogen \u2014 aka carbs \u2014 that it can use for fuel,\u201d Davis says.<\/p>\n<p>That is, assuming your workout clocks in at less than an hour. If they\u2019re longer, make time to eat or drink a little something that contains carbs. You might also want to make Energize a part of your pre-workout morning routine.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Before P.M. workouts<\/h3>\n<p>If you prefer afternoon or evening workouts, and it\u2019s been three or four hours since your last meal, it might be a good idea to top off your fuel stores with a pre-workout snack. Choose one of the options above, based on how much time you have to let your food digest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you should also evaluate how you feel,\u201d Davis says.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t feel hungry at all and your workout isn\u2019t long or intense, there\u2019s no need to force a snack or meal. Just be sure to replenish with muscle-repairing protein and carbs after your workout, she explains.<\/p>\n<p>The exception? If you\u2019re trying to build muscle, you most likely should eat before your workouts, no matter the time of day, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acsm.org\/docs\/default-source\/files-for-resource-library\/protein-intake-for-optimal-muscle-maintenance.pdf?sfvrsn=688d8896_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American College of Sports Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You need to eat adequate calories and protein to promote new muscle growth and repair.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/beachbody-blog\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Should-I-Eat-Before-Working-Out.600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-130941 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/beachbody-blog\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Should-I-Eat-Before-Working-Out.600.jpg\" alt=\"Tired man laying on floor\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>What Not to Eat Before a Workout<\/h2>\n<p>Food should fuel your workout, not hinder it. Definitely avoid any foods that typically make you feel bloated or uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>And steer clear of food that\u2019s high in fiber, protein, and fat, especially if you\u2019re less than three hours from your workout.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll three slow down digestion and delay stomach emptying,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cynthiasass.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cynthia Sass, RD, CSSD<\/a>, a dietitian who has worked with professional basketball, baseball, and hockey teams.<\/p>\n<p>Those are helpful traits when you\u2019re trying to get through your work day without making repeat trips to the kitchen or vending machine. But before a workout?<\/p>\n<p>That trio of high fiber, protein, and fat will only dampen your performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe body has to focus on digesting these foods instead of promoting blood flow to the muscles during the workout,\u201d Davis explains.<\/p>\n<p>Bottom line: If you\u2019re asking yourself \u201cShould I eat before working out?\u201d the answer is likely yes.
