{"id":5516,"date":"2020-01-01T20:40:32","date_gmt":"2020-01-02T03:40:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/?p=5516"},"modified":"2025-09-11T16:17:26","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T22:17:26","slug":"smart-goals-can-help-you-stay-on-track","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/2020\/01\/01\/smart-goals-can-help-you-stay-on-track\/","title":{"rendered":"SMART Goals Can Help You Stay on Track"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5517\" src=\"https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/How_SMART_Goals_Will_Help_You_Keep_Your_Resolutions.shutterstock_452664640.HEADER.jpg\" alt=\"SMART Goals Can Help You Stay on Track\" width=\"770\" height=\"385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/How_SMART_Goals_Will_Help_You_Keep_Your_Resolutions.shutterstock_452664640.HEADER.jpg 770w, https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/How_SMART_Goals_Will_Help_You_Keep_Your_Resolutions.shutterstock_452664640.HEADER-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/How_SMART_Goals_Will_Help_You_Keep_Your_Resolutions.shutterstock_452664640.HEADER-768x384.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To regain my focus and boost my resolution success rate, this year I decided to set SMART goals \u2014\u00a0SMART is an acronym for\u00a0<strong>S<\/strong>pecific,\u00a0<strong>M<\/strong>easurable,\u00a0<strong>A<\/strong>ttainable (or\u00a0<strong>A<\/strong>chievable),\u00a0<strong>R<\/strong>elevant (or\u00a0<strong>R<\/strong>ealistic), and\u00a0<strong>T<\/strong>imely.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m a big fan of lists, so every New Year I jot down\u00a0goals for the 12 months ahead\u00a0and keep them on a notepad by my computer.<\/p>\n<p>As the year goes on, however, my list of aspirations evolves into more of a mundane to-do list: Lose weight, eat better, and do more yoga move to the bottom of the list, as I tackle tasks like \u201crefi the condo\u201d and \u201cget a colonoscopy.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Define What You Want to Achieve<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The first step to successfully achieving your goals is to carefully define them, says Terri Babers, M.A., C.P.C., an independent certified coach, teacher, and speaker based in Fairbanks, Alaska. \u201cA mistake people often make is jumping in and setting goals without clearly understanding why. You need to think about the benefits of achieving these goals and how you are going to feel when you accomplish them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Babers has clients examine what they love doing, their priorities, and any obstacles to making changes in their lives before diving into SMART goal setting.<\/p>\n<p>For example, I love yoga, but I can\u2019t commit to a daily practice because of family and work commitments. Setting a goal to become a certified yoga instructor isn\u2019t realistic for me, but I\u00a0<em>can<\/em>\u00a0make it a priority\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teambeachbody.com\/bod-offer?ICID=BLOG_BOD_3WYR&amp;referringrepid=1393&amp;refsource=Blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to do yoga three times a week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSMART goals are easy if you are ready for action,\u201d says Babers. \u201cBut you must be open to change if you want to succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10170281093\" title=\"How SMART Goals Will Help You Keep Your Resolutions\" src=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/beachbody-blog\/uploads\/2017\/04\/How_SMART_Goals_Will_Help_You_Keep_Your_Resolutions.shutterstock_408980908.inpost.jpg\" alt=\"How SMART Goals Will Help You Keep Your Resolutions\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How to Set a SMART Goal<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3>1. Make it Specific<\/h3>\n<p>Once you have a goal in mind, define it in as much detail as possible. Think about the who, when, what, where, and why of each goal, and weigh the cost of achieving those parameters.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of a general goal like \u201close weight,\u201d I narrowed it down to:\u00a0lose 15 pounds\u00a0by working out after work three times a week.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, I need to commit four hours in my weekly schedule for this new activity, which will result in me looking and feeling great for my upcoming high school reunion.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Make it Measurable<\/h3>\n<p>Define exactly how you will\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/burnthis\/id734831524?ls=1&amp;mt=8&amp;refsource=Blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">measure your progress<\/a>\u00a0in reaching your goal. For example, since my goal is to lose 15 pounds, I\u2019ll weigh myself every morning to see how I\u2019m doing.<\/p>\n<p>For my goal to do more yoga, I\u2019ll mark the days I go to yoga on my calendar with a big X, so I can chart my progress throughout the month.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Make it Attainable<\/h3>\n<p>Try to\u00a0set goals\u00a0that are just a little out of your comfort zone, but still realistic, suggests Babers. \u201cDon\u2019t set yourself up for failure, which can lead to guilt, shame, and regret,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>By figuring out if you have the energy, focus, and time to achieve each goal, you can avoid setting the bar too high.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of just trying to \u201ceat better,\u201d my goal is to eat more fruits and vegetables. Because of my fairly regular hamburger cravings, I know trying to go vegetarian is\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0achievable.<\/p>\n<p>A more realistic way of hitting my goal is to incorporate more\u00a0smoothies,\u00a0salads, and\u00a0veggie stir-fries\u00a0into my diet.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Make it Relevant<\/h3>\n<p>To figure out the right goals to put on your \u201cto-do\u201d list, Babers says you also need to decide what\u2019s on your \u201cnot-to-do\u201d list.<\/p>\n<p>Goals need to be personal and geared toward what works for\u00a0<em>you<\/em>.\u00a0Running may be a great way to lose weight\u00a0for some people, but I hate to run. I like the idea of feeling accountable to a trainer, so that\u2019s a better fitness\/weight-loss option for me.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Make it Timely<\/h3>\n<p>Define a date by which you\u2019ll accomplish your goals and set milestones along the way.
