But unless you have a Leslie Knope-sized appreciation for waffles, you might be inclined to skip the first meal of the day. After all, mornings are hectic enough as it is    and a calorie saved is a calorie earned for dessert later, right?<\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"http:\/\/well.blogs.nytimes.com\/2013\/09\/10\/myths-surround-breakfast-and-weight\/?_r=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">skipping breakfast isn&#8217;t actually a foolproof way to cut calories<\/a>. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Even if you do \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcsave&#8217; calories, you&#8217;ll blast right through any deficit when you finally do get the chance to eat,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d says Abbey Sharp, R.D., and owner of Abbey&#8217;s Kitchen. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153When you let yourself get ravenous, it&#8217;s difficult to make mindful decisions at that next meal.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Eating breakfast can help you establish healthy eating habits and give you an edge in the weight-loss game    as long as you do it right. But it could be worth waking up a few minutes earlier to make time for breakfast.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153When you start the day with a healthy breakfast, you&#8217;ll be more likely to continue the theme later on,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Sharp says. And people who eat breakfast in the morning tend to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18996877\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">choose foods throughout the day with lower \u00e2\u20ac\u0153energy density<\/a>,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d which is the number of calories per gram of food. (Beans, veggies, and lean protein are all examples of foods with lower energy density.)<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Not all breakfasts are equal.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In theory, <em>any<\/em> food eaten in the morning could qualify as breakfast. But that doesn&#8217;t give you carte blanche to start your day with a hot fudge sundae. According to at least one study, a healthy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4017414\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">high-protein breakfast can increase your energy levels<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 unlike that bowl of cereal. Consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4017414\/table\/T0003\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">adding eggs, beans, skinless chicken, or salmon<\/a> to your breakfast routine. They&#8217;ll give you more lasting fuel than marshmallows will. Yes, even the star-shaped ones.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Find your own breakfast groove.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Here&#8217;s where it gets a little tricky. Despite findings like the study above, some researchers have suggested that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4042085\/#B13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">breakfast may not deserve all of the credit it gets<\/a>. If you eat a midnight snack and aren&#8217;t hungry again until noon, this might not be any better or worse than \u00e2\u20ac\u0153fasting\u00e2\u20ac\u009d from dinner until dawn. That&#8217;s because we tend to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.journalsleep.org\/ViewAbstract.aspx?pid=30492\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">grab less healthy grub when we&#8217;re tired<\/a>. Research has also shown that limiting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23702187\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nighttime snacking reduces total calorie intake<\/a> for the day.<\/p>\n<p>So if you have no appetite in the morning, ask yourself why. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153If you&#8217;re not hungry because you were out late or had a big dinner the night before, acknowledge that, and wait until your body tells you to eat,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Sharp says.<\/p>\n<p>But don&#8217;t wait &#8217;til lunch before you reassess your hunger: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Check in with yourself and ask, \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcAm I hungry for something, even just a glass of milk or a peach?&#8217; and respond accordingly,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Sharp adds.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Breakfast is not a magic bullet.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Some researchers have noted that in a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153free-living\u00e2\u20ac\u009d study    where people weren&#8217;t told what to eat for breakfast    there was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24898236\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no notable difference in weight loss between breakfast eaters and skippers<\/a>.
