I&#8217;m 75, and I want to live a marathon of years (26.2) to make it to 100 and beyond. I was running this morning in the Corrales, New Mexico bosque along an acequia path when I came upon two women with their three dogs. I stopped and mentioned that my daughter and I have three dogs like theirs &#8211; two large and one small. As I started to run again, one of the women said, &#8220;Are you training for a marathon?&#8221; I answered, &#8220;Yes, for a marathon of life,&#8221; and explained what it was.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.runningforalifetime.com\/2026\/07\/07\/training-log-for-the-week-of-july-6th-2026\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12034\" src=\"https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/071126-10.jpeg\" alt=\"My Marathon of Life, Explained\" width=\"1074\" height=\"806\" srcset=\"https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/071126-10.jpeg 1074w, https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/071126-10-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/071126-10-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/howtobefit.com\/coach-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/071126-10-768x576.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1074px) 100vw, 1074px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"1244\" data-end=\"1287\">For most runners, a marathon is 26.2 miles.\u00a0For me, my next marathon has become 26.2 years.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1332\" data-end=\"1629\">I&#8217;ve reached the point in my running career where personal records at traditional race distances are probably behind me. I could still run an ultramarathon someday and earn a new personal record simply because I&#8217;ve never raced that distance before, but eventually those opportunities become fewer.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1631\" data-end=\"1662\">That made me realize something.\u00a0There is still one personal record I can continue chasing every single day.\u00a0Living well.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1755\" data-end=\"1875\">If I can stay healthy, strong, and active for another 26.2 years, that would be the greatest personal record of my life.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1877\" data-end=\"1905\">I already know how to train.\u00a0I&#8217;ve been running for nearly six decades and coaching people for more than 40 years. I understand the importance of consistency, strength training, and endurance.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2071\" data-end=\"2166\">What I&#8217;m realizing is that the next phase of my journey depends just as much on something else &#8211; nutrition and recovery<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2197\" data-end=\"2407\">The workouts are only part of the equation.
