Learn what they are in this post in the BODi Blog by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jessica-migala\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jessica Migala<\/a><\/strong>.<\/div>\n<div class=\"entry__content entry-content\">\n<p>There are a lot of good reasons why\u00a0cooking at home is ideal, but the most important reason is that\u00a0<em>you<\/em>\u00a0are in control.<\/p>\n<p>You decide what ingredients and how much goes into your meals at home \u2014 something you can\u2019t easily do when you eat out at a restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>But there may be\u00a0small mistakes\u00a0you\u2019re making when it comes to whipping up a homemade meal or snack that can lead to weight gain, from pouring on the olive oil to baking \u201clow-fat\u201d cookies.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some cooking mistakes you may be making at home that you can correct.<\/p>\n<h2>1. You\u2019re too generous with olive oil<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-146619 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bodiblog.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Cooking-Mistakes-That-May-Cause-Weight-Gain.600.oil_.jpg\" alt=\"Oil pouring into pan\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>No doubt\u00a0olive oil is a healthy fat\u00a0\u2014 it\u2019s rich in monounsaturated fatty acids. In addition, the aroma of olive oil may even improve satiety, prompting you to eat less at later meals, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tum.de\/en\/about-tum\/news\/press-releases\/short\/article\/30517\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But that doesn\u2019t mean you can pour it on with abandon.<\/p>\n<p>One tablespoon of olive oil contains 120 calories, and if you\u2019re eyeballing how much you add to a pan, it\u2019s easy to pour twice that \u2014 and therefore, twice the calories.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica Swift, M.S., R.D. suggests using just enough oil to coat the pan\u2019s cooking surface, then using a paper towel to wipe off any excess oil before adding other ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, try saut\u00e9ing veggies in low-sodium chicken or veggie stock or white wine.<\/p>\n<h2>2. You forget to spice things up<\/h2>\n<p>Rethink how you add flavor to foods. Instead of covering steamed broccoli in butter, sauces, or cheese,\u00a0reach for your spice rack.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2013\/07\/130715134640.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A study from the University of Colorado<\/a>\u00a0found that when people added herbs and spices to reduced-fat foods, they rated those foods as tasty as their full-fat versions.<\/p>\n<p>Swift likes rubbing fish with dill, paprika, and garlic and topping it with a squeeze of lemon.<\/p>\n<p>Also try covering chicken breasts with rosemary, garlic, lemon or orange slices, and sage before cooking.<\/p>\n<h2>3. You bake meat without a rack<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-146620 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bodiblog.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Cooking-Mistakes-That-May-Cause-Weight-Gain.600.rack_.jpg\" alt=\"Chicken thighs in baking pan\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Baking chicken in the oven can definitely help save calories over pan-frying or saut\u00e9ing, but here\u2019s what you\u2019re probably missing: You should elevate the meat and cook it on a rack.<\/p>\n<p>This allows the fat to drain away, Swift says. Do the same with veggies. Toss them with oil, salt, and pepper, then roast on a rack placed atop a baking sheet.<\/p>\n<p>When done, they won\u2019t be swimming in gobs of oil, but you\u2019ll still enjoy the same delicious flavor.<\/p>\n<h2>4. You\u2019re \u201ccleaning up\u201d baked goods<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-146618 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bodiblog.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Cooking-Mistakes-That-May-Cause-Weight-Gain.600.muffins.jpg\" alt=\"Healthy vegan oat muffins, apple, banana cakes on cooling rack\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You know all the tricks to \u201chealth-ify\u201d treats like cookies, muffins, and brownies.<\/p>\n<p>You use pur\u00e9ed fruit instead of sugar. Add\u00a0avocado to your brownies\u00a0for a hit of healthy fats. Swap in whole-grain flour in your muffins.<\/p>\n<p>But if you chow down on four of your healthier brownies because your new recipe contains half the fat \u2014 that defeats the entire purpose of a healthy snack.<\/p>\n<p>And while it\u2019s a good idea to make an effort to add as much nutrition as possible to treats, it can make it easier to justify a splurge.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, people tend to eat larger portions of food if it\u2019s marked \u201chealthy,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/ijo\/journal\/vaop\/ncurrent\/pdf\/ijo201369a.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to research in the<\/a>\u00a0<em>International Journal of Obesity<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>5. You\u2019re, well, cooking everything<\/h2>\n<p>Because research shows that adults are eating far too few fruits and vegetables, it\u2019s a good idea to try to get more into your diet, whether steamed, roasted, or grilled \u2014 whatever way you love them the most.<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t forget to eat them raw, too.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2011\/10\/31\/1112128108.abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to a 2011 study published in the journal\u00a0<em>PNAS<\/em><\/a>, the process of cooking produce makes more calories available to the body.<\/p>\n<p>That means your body burns more calories by simply digesting raw foods, which could translate into weight loss.<\/p>\n<p>(Sure, it\u2019s a minimal amount, but over time this can add up.)<\/p>\n<p>So don\u2019t forget to include big salads; crudit\u00e9s, like sliced cukes and red peppers, dipped in salsa or guac; or gazpacho in your meal rotation.<\/p>\n<h2>6.
