If you\u2019re doing a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bodi.pxf.io\/xLqqov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BODi program<\/a><\/strong>, you can easily build a home gym if you\u2019re on a budget and trying to keep costs low.<\/p>\n<p>You can even build one if you\u2019re short on space, and you don\u2019t need to go crazy and buy a ton of home workout equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Read on to see the benefits of a home gym, how to pick the right room, and the essential tools you need to do a BODi program.<\/p>\n<h2>Benefits of Having a Home Gym<\/h2>\n<p>You might already know that you can use\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bodi.pxf.io\/xLqqov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BODi<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<mark class=\"\"><\/mark>to stream your workout program anywhere you go, which means if you already have a gym membership, you bring your program on your laptop, tablet, or phone and do it there.<\/p>\n<p>(We don\u2019t recommend lugging in your own TV; gyms tend to frown on that sort of thing!)<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t already belong to a gym or are thinking about letting your membership lapse, here are some benefits to having your own home gym:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. A home gym will help you save time<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Unless you live in a magical land where traffic doesn\u2019t exist \u2013 or have a teleportation device \u2013 getting to the gym requires getting in your car, driving there, dealing with traffic, finding parking, finding a workout space, working out, and then doing the whole commute in reverse.<\/p>\n<p>If you have your own home gym, you can just go to that space, start doing your workout, and get a glass of water or\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bodi.pxf.io\/c\/4818714\/2213645\/27336\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beachbody Performance Recover<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0when you\u2019re done.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bodi.pxf.io\/c\/4818714\/2213645\/27336\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beachbody Performance Recover<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is my after-workout treat and knowing I get to enjoy it when I\u2019m done with my workout gets me through some of my hardest ones.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. A home gym may save you money<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Though you might pay more up front outfitting your home gym with the right workout equipment than you would for one month at your current or previous gym, the long-term savings will quickly add up.<\/p>\n<p>Most BODi programs require little to no home workout equipment. And, even for those that do, the cost savings will eventually eclipse the amount you\u2019d spend paying for a gym membership.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. A home gym might get you better results<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019re not saying you won\u2019t get results at the gym. But, if you don\u2019t go often because of all that\u2019s involved (described above in benefit #1), then you could probably be getting\u00a0<i>better<\/i>\u00a0results.<\/p>\n<p>By creating a personal workout space in your house, you not only sidestep those issues, you\u2019ll also have one less excuse to skip your workout. And that consistency \u2014 in both your diet and your fitness \u2014 will get you the results that you desire.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-101702100155 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bodiblog.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Home-Gym.jpg\" alt=\"Home Gym\" width=\"600\" height=\"404\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>The Best Room for Your Home Gym<\/h2>\n<p>Your options\u00a0for the best home gym setup vary. They depend on the size of your home, how many people live in it, and the type of workout you do.<\/p>\n<p>There are a few things to keep in mind when selecting the best room for your home gym.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How much traffic does the room get?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Ideally, your home gym room will be in a low-traffic area of your home. For instance, if you set up your home gym in the den, your workout time may conflict with when others want to watch TV \u2014 a battle you\u2019re likely to lose.<\/p>\n<p>While you can try to encourage them to join you, make it easier on everyone by finding a space where you can do your workout\u00a0when it\u2019s most convenient for you.<\/p>\n<p>That said, we understand that\u2019s not always possible, so you may need to schedule your workouts<mark class=\"\"><\/mark>\u00a0when you\u2019re least likely to be interrupted and if the family room is the only available place, then the family room it is.<\/p>\n<p>However, if possible, you want somewhere that can be your own. Where you can shut the door, play your favorite workout music,\u00a0hang prints or posters that will motivate you, and get your sweat on. Somewhere that\u2019s your escape from all the to-dos life throws at you.<\/p>\n<p>So, if you have a spare room available (preferably on the first floor if your workouts involve jumping), a space you can clear out in the basement, or part of the garage you can transform, use it!<\/p>\n<p>No extra space? I\u2019ve been using the family room for years, and it\u2019s working out just fine!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Do you have enough space to do your workout?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For BODi workouts, your workout area should ideally be 12? by 12? so you can leap, jump, and lunge without running into the furniture. BODi tries to follow a \u201ctwo steps in either direction\u201d rule when creating workouts.<\/p>\n<p>However, sometimes those \u201csteps\u201d are more like \u201cleaps,\u201d so more room to move will likely net greater results and fewer bruises.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How high is the ceiling?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Are they high enough so you can jump without hitting your head? Unless you\u2019re quite tall (or working out in the French catacombs), they should be, but it is something to keep in mind.<\/p>\n<p>Same with anything hanging from or attached to your ceiling, be that a disco ball, light, or ceiling fan. When doing jumping jacks or plyometric workouts, you want to get results, not a hole in your ceiling or a call to 911.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of jumping\u2026 if there are things that rattle when you jump, it might be worth securing them with museum putty.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What kind of floor does it have?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Having the proper flooring in your workout space can make the difference between sore knees and a happy, healthy you.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re going to be jumping or doing plyometric or floor exercises on wood or concrete, consider putting down a few locking rubber mats with runner rugs beneath them so that they don\u2019t slide. The padding will make the surface softer to land on and you shouldn\u2019t go flying.<\/p>\n<p>For extra padding, consider also using a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4nRhb5d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plyometric mat<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0This is a great piece of home workout equipment because it\u2019s\u00a0thicker and denser than a yoga mat and more comfortable to land on. If you plan to mostly be stretching or doing core work, you should be OK with using a yoga mat.<\/p>\n<h2>The Best Home Workout Equipment: The Essentials<\/h2>\n<p>The equipment you need for your home gym is entirely dependent on what kind of workout you\u2019re doing. While it might be tempting to go absolutely gear crazy, you don\u2019t need to break the bank to start a solid home gym.<\/p>\n<p>Begin with a few, necessary basics and build your collection as you go. In addition to the aforementioned flooring, here are a few vital pieces of home workout equipment, for beginners and pros alike.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re doing one of BODi cardio programs, you\u2019ll likely only need proper flooring and a good pair of shoes! For instance, the workout programs\u00a0CORE DE FORCE,\u00a0INSANITY, and\u00a0INSANITY:MAX 30, don\u2019t require any equipment at all. And\u00a03 Week Yoga Retreat\u00a0only requires a yoga mat.<\/p>\n<p>For programs that include resistance training workouts that use more than bodyweight, you\u2019ll need some workout equipment essentials.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Dumbbells<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re doing a program that calls for you to add non-bodyweight focused resistance training to your regimen \u2013 such as 21 Day Fix,\u00a080 Day Obsession,\u00a0Morning Meltdown 100, or LIIFT4,\u00a0<mark class=\"\"><\/mark>you\u2019ll need to pick up dumbbells or resistance bands.<mark class=\"\"><\/mark><\/p>\n<p>With dumbbells, you have two options. You can purchase individual weights \u2014 you\u2019ll want at least one light, one medium, and one heavy set \u2014 or you can purchase selectorized dumbbells that let you adjust the weight.<\/p>\n<p>Expect to pay about a dollar a pound (per weight) for standard dumbbells new, more for the adjustable variety. But keep in mind that selectorized dumbbells replace an entire dumbbell rack, so you\u2019ll likely recoup the extra cost in the long run.<\/p>\n<p>Trevor Thieme,\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">C.S.C.S. and BODi executive director of fitness and nutrition content,\u00a0<\/span>recommends the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3WakOHt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Power Block adjustable dumbbell sets<\/a><\/strong> that range from 5 to 70 pounds for men and from 5 to 50 pounds for women.<\/p>\n<p>If that\u2019s out of your budget,\u00a0it\u2019s fairly easy to find used exercise equipment for sale. The same goes for classic (non-selectorized) dumbbells. Ask friends if they have any they aren\u2019t using, hit up garage sales, and look on Craigslist to pick up weights on the cheap.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-101702100165 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bodiblog.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Home-Workout-Equipment-Dumbbells.jpg\" alt=\"home workout equipment\" width=\"600\" height=\"511\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Resistance bands<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Dumbbells are better for building muscle, but resistance bands can be a highly effective addition to your home workout equipment arsenal.<\/p>\n<p>Plus they\u2019re easier to carry in a suitcase making them perfect travel workout equipment, and are less likely to cause you to spend serious money on overweight baggage fees.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/48BbrIi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Resistance bands<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0are elasticized plastic tubes that allow you to control the tension by shortening or lengthening the band.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you use BODi bands or another brand, one advantage bands have over dumbbells and other free weights is that they provide constant tension throughout the lifting movement.<\/p>\n<p>In so doing, they help maximize time under tension, which helps build muscle.<mark class=\"\"><\/mark><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/48BbrIi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Resistance bands<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0are approximately 60? in length and come in a wide range of resistance levels:<\/p>\n<p>Teal \u2013 5 pounds<br \/>\nPurple \u2013 10 pounds<br \/>\nPink \u2013 15 pounds<br \/>\nMagenta \u2013 20 pounds<br \/>\nOrange \u2013 25 pounds<br \/>\nRed \u2013 30 pounds<br \/>\nYellow \u2013 35 pounds<br \/>\nGreen \u2013 40 pounds<br \/>\nBlue \u2013 45 pounds<br \/>\nBlack \u2013 50 pounds<\/p>\n<p>Every program in the BODi catalog can be done with bands instead of dumbbells, and to make it easy, most videos feature a cast member doing the workout with bands.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Pull-up bar<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Want great-looking arms and a sexy back? Pull-ups and chin-ups will definitely help you get there. You can install a pull-up bar in any wall with the help of a stud finder. However, for a safe, less permanent solution, check out these <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3KmD5Pj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chin-up bars.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can mount the bar<mark class=\"\"><\/mark> onto almost any door frame and remove it when you\u2019re not working out. The bar is designed to support up to 300 pounds, and you can use it to do many different variations of pull-ups or chin-ups, including corn cobs!<\/p>\n<h2>The Best Home Workout Equipment: The Extras<\/h2>\n<p>These items aren\u2019t must-haves for your home gym but they\u2019ll help you squeeze a little more from your workout.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Foam roller<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4pPleks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Owning a foam roller<\/a><\/strong> is like having a personal masseuse on call whenever you need relief from your soreness. Foam rollers can help\u00a0ease tension, improve mobility, and reduce muscle pain\u00a0in as little as five to 10 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-101702100159 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bodiblog.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Home-Workout-Equipment-Foam-Roller1.jpg\" alt=\"home workout equipment\" width=\"600\" height=\"438\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Pull-up assist<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you can\u2019t yet do unassisted pull-ups or chin-ups, consider purchasing a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4pRAgpR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chin-up assist\u00a0to help you\u00a0get better at pull-ups<\/a><\/strong>. A chip-up assist looks like a resistance band but helps you get a little extra lift when doing chin-ups or pull-ups.<\/p>\n<p>Attach the accessory to a pull-up bar, put your foot in the strap, adjust the resistance, and lift yourself as if you were doing a normal pull-up.<\/p>\n<p>As you get stronger, you can reduce the assistance you receive by removing one and then two of the three bands, ultimately ditching the device entirely.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Push-up stands<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Some people find\u00a0push-ups\u00a0cause pain in their wrists.
