Plus, they can be great alternatives for people with nut allergies.<\/p>\n<p>But you only need a few spoonfuls to get the benefits of most edible seeds, which tend to be high in calories relative to their volume. \u201cIt\u2019s best to keep your portions moderate,\u201d advises\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tanyabnutrition.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tanya B. Chia Seeds<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-147691 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bodiblog.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/chia-seeds-edible-seeds.jpeg\" alt=\"chia edible seeds\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>High in:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/fdc-app.html#\/food-details\/170554\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fiber, magnesium, omega-3s, phosphorus<\/a>, selenium<\/p>\n<p>Chia seeds are among the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/nutritionsource\/food-features\/chia-seeds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">richest plant sources<\/a>\u00a0of omega-3 fatty acids on Earth. They\u2019re also packed with fiber and a number of minerals.<\/p>\n<p>Kids born in the \u201980s got their introduction to chia sprouts with kitschy,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2FBu14b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">terra-cotta pet planters<\/a>\u00a0(be grateful if you had a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/innovation\/keeping-tamagotchi-alive-180979264\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tamagotchi<\/a>). They are indeed the same chia seeds, but you should never snack on the packet included with a Chia Pet because they\u2019re not approved for consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Edible chia seeds were a staple crop of ancient Mexico and Guatemala, offered to the Aztec gods. Now they\u2019re revered for their\u00a0superfood\u00a0status.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChia seeds can absorb up to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/8381315\/MUCILAGEFROMCHIASEEDSSalviahispanicaMICROESTRUCTUREPHYSICO-CHEMICALCHARACTERIZATIONANDAPPLICATIONSINFOOD_INDUSTRY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">12 times their weight<\/a>\u00a0in liquid, which is what helps make\u00a0chia pudding\u00a0or a thick smoothie,\u201d says Freirich. \u201cBut they don\u2019t need to be soaked; you can drizzle them right onto salads or cereal.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>2. In Greece, where the\u00a0Mediterranean diet\u00a0helps to promote heart health,\u00a0roasted pumpkin seeds\u00a0are a common snack nicknamed \u201cpassatempo,\u201d or pastime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though roasted pumpkin seeds are delicious, their healthy fats\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0889157505000165\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">start to break down<\/a>\u00a0after 20 minutes of roasting in the microwave,\u201d Freirich says. \u201cLimit microwave roasting time to around 12 minutes for the most nutritious results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also, eating the shell with the seed can also increase the amount of fiber and\u00a0zinc\u00a0you get from pumpkin seeds.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Flax Seeds<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-147693 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bodiblog.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/flaxseed-flour-edible-seeds.jpeg\" alt=\"edible flax seeds flaxseed\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<div><strong>High in:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/fdc-app.html#\/food-details\/169414\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fiber, magnesium, omega-3s, thiamin<\/a><\/div>\n<p>Like chia and hemp seeds, flax seeds (a.k.a. linseeds) are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2989356\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">among the richest sources<\/a>\u00a0of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential omega-3 fatty acid. Along with this\u00a0\u201cgood\u201d fat, they deliver soluble and insoluble fiber and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lpi.oregonstate.edu\/mic\/dietary-factors\/phytochemicals\/lignans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lignans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLignans are powerful antioxidants,\u201d says Amy Shapiro, MS, RD, CDN, of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/realnutritionnyc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Real Nutrition<\/a>\u00a0in New York. In fact, flaxseeds actually contain\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4375225\/#Sec9title\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">75 to 800 times more lignans<\/a>\u00a0than many other plant foods.<\/p>\n<p>Recent studies have positively linked flaxseeds to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19568181\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cardiovascular health<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26561065\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blood sugar<\/a>, and even\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5808339\/#:~:text=Flaxseed%20is%20considered%20as%20the,6%20(29%2C%2030).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">some types of cancer<\/a>. One common mistake people make with flaxseeds is eating them whole.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to eat ground flaxseed for your body to absorb the omega-3s,\u201d says Frierich. \u201cYou can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2FFiBfv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">buy ground flaxseed<\/a>\u00a0from the store, but it has a shorter shelf life than whole ones, so as an alternative, you can easily grind them at home in a spice or coffee grinder.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>4. Hemp Seeds<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-147695 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bodiblog.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/hemp-seeds-edible-seeds.jpeg\" alt=\"hemp edible seeds\" width=\"600\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>High in:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/fdc-app.html#\/food-details\/170148\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Magnesium, phosphorus, zinc<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unlike poppy seeds, which in very rare cases could potentially cause you to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usada.org\/can-poppyseeds-cause-a-positive-drug-test\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fail a doping test<\/a>\u00a0owing to trace amounts of morphine, hemp seeds won\u2019t get you into trouble \u2014 or get you high. It\u2019s true that hemp is a close cousin to marijuana in the Cannabis plant family, however it has much\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/newsevents\/publichealthfocus\/ucm421168.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lower concentrations of THC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to being\u00a0magnesium\u00a0rich, hemp seeds are also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20977230\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">easier to digest<\/a>\u00a0than some grains, nuts, and legumes. They also boast\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6110517\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">anti-inflammatory properties<\/a>, which is why they\u2019re sometimes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16019622\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recommended<\/a>\u00a0for people with eczema, according to Shapiro. They also deliver some heart-healthy omega-3s,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/fdc-app.html#\/food-details\/170148\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fiber, iron, and potassium<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>5. They have a delicious nutty flavor that makes them a popular topping on everything from sushi rolls to bagels, and they provide antioxidant-powered\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1002\/ejlt.200700057\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lignans<\/a>, protein, and other minerals.<\/p>\n<p>Tahini paste, which helps turn chickpeas into delicious hummus and makes a great base for tasty salad dressings, is made from crushed sesame seeds.
