What\u2019s the difference between Pilates and yoga? And should you add Pilates to your exercise regimen to help you lose weight?<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you need to know.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-pilates\">What Is Pilates?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Pilates is a full-body,\u00a0low-impact\u00a0form of exercise performed on a mat or other specialized equipment that uses a combination of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3666467\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approximately 50<\/a>\u00a0repetitive movements to promote strength, stability, flexibility, and body awareness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Every Pilates move is designed to strengthen the \u201cpowerhouse\u201d of the body, a.k.a. the core. \u201cWith every single exercise, there\u2019s\u00a0core engagement. When you find that, you are doing Pilates!\u201d says Andrea Rogers, creator of\u00a0Xtend Barre\u00a0and\u00a0XB Pilates.<\/p>\n<p>Pilates dates back to the early 1900s. Its creator, Joseph Pilates, struggled with illness as a child and developed a series of\u00a0exercises\u00a0to build strength. Later, he used the Pilates method \u2014 which he originally called Contrology \u2014 while\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/scholar_lookup?title=The%20Pilates%20Body&amp;author=B%20Siler&amp;publication_year=2000&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interned during World War I<\/a>\u00a0to help his fellow inmates maintain their health.<\/p>\n<p>And while modern-day Pilates workouts may incorporate the use of props and machines, many exercises \u2014 like\u00a0leg kicks\u00a0and\u00a0clamshells\u00a0\u2014 have stayed the same for the past 100 years.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-benefits-of-pilates\">What Are the Benefits of Pilates?<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>1. Core strength<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When we hear the word \u201ccore,\u201d many of us think of our abs (and that coveted six-pack). But the core is actually a vast muscle group that starts at your pelvis and continues to the base of your neck.<\/p>\n<p>Your core includes the internal and external obliques, the traverse abdominis, and the multifidus and erector spinae, says Wendy Erven, ACSM and Balanced Body personal trainer and owner of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.core10pilates.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Core10 Pilates<\/a>\u00a0in Omaha, Nebraska.<\/p>\n<p>Developing a strong core can help improve your posture and give you a longer, leaner look.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Flexibility<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Feeling a little tight when you bend over to tie your shoelaces? Pilates can help improve flexibility. That\u2019s because the slow, controlled movements allow muscles to stretch further, improving range of motion over time, Erven says.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Muscle endurance<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20145572\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">One study<\/a>\u00a0found that two one-hour Pilates sessions per week, for 12 weeks, were enough to improve abdominal endurance and upper-body endurance.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. Low barrier to entry<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Pilates may seem intimidating if you\u2019ve never tried it, but it\u2019s actually\u00a0perfect for beginners. Pilates moves are challenging, but they can be scaled up or down for any fitness level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe movements can be adapted for all types of bodies and all ages. A class can be taught with modifications for teens or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/spinejournal\/abstract\/2009\/05010\/sagittal_spinal_posture_after_pilates_based.11.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seniors<\/a>,\u201d says Andrea. So, everyone \u2014 from total beginners to athletes \u2014 can experience the benefits of Pilates.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"pilates-vs-yoga-whats-the-difference\">Pilates vs. Yoga: What\u2019s the Difference?<\/h2>\n<p>The focus on flexibility and core strength might remind you of\u00a0yoga, but there are a few key differences between\u00a0yoga and Pilates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYoga has a history of practicing meditation with\u00a0vinyasa\u00a0movement,\u201d Andrea says, which aims to center the mind and body.<\/p>\n<p>Pilates, on the other hand, tends to be more fitness-focused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPilates is a modern-day movement modality focused on achieving physical goals and increasing core strength,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-146257 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bodiblog.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/What-Is-Pilates.600.reformer.jpg\" alt=\"Woman on Pilates Reformer\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"pilates-vs-yoga-whats-the-difference\">The 2 Types of Pilates<\/h2>\n<p>While most Pilates workouts like XB Pilates are centered on the same moves, there are two main formats you can try to find the right exercise program for you.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Mat Pilates<\/h3>\n<p>Mat Pilates is probably the most recognizable and accessible form of Pilates because it can be done almost anywhere, as long as you have a mat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt features foundational core work executed with precision and focus,\u201d Andrea says. \u201cAdditional props [like balls, resistance bands, and weights] can be included to intensify your experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>2. Reformer Pilates<\/h3>\n<p>In\u00a0Reformer Pilates, a machine called \u2014 you guessed it \u2014 the Reformer makes this strength training workout more challenging.<\/p>\n<p>Using spring resistance and a moving carriage, the Reformer provides an unsteady surface that challenges your balance when you stand or kneel on it.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-pilates-help-you-lose-weight\">Can Pilates Help You Lose Weight?<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-146256 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bodiblog.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/What-is-Pilates.600.andrea.jpg\" alt=\"Andrea Rogers leading XB Pilates class\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pilates might be able to help you lose weight, but there are a lot of factors that play into the fat-burning power of the workout.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt depends what kind of Pilates you\u2019re doing,\u201d Erven says.<\/p>\n<p>A slow Pilates workout won\u2019t have the same calorie-torching ability of a fast-paced class designed to work up a sweat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHigh-intensity Pilates that burns 300 to 500 calories a workout can assist anyone with weight loss if they\u2019re committed to a solid nutrition plan,\u201d Erven says.<\/p>\n<p>So if weight loss is your main goal, look for a higher-intensity Pilates workout \u2014 and be sure to keep your nutrition in check.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-should-i-wear-to-pilates\">What Should I Wear to Pilates?<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0best things to wear for Pilates\u00a0are clothes that are comfy, functional, and form-fitting.
