It requires adherence to a very specific training and nutrition plan, and genetics plays a role, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTypically, women are scared to lift weights because they\u2019re afraid to get \u2018bulky,\u2019 but that isn\u2019t true,\u201d says Amanda Herrera, CPT.<\/p>\n<p>And if you\u2019re wondering how to train to gain lean muscle, it\u2019s important to clarify: Muscle is muscle.<\/p>\n<p>So if building lean muscle is your goal, what you actually need to do is increase muscle mass\u00a0<em data-redactor-tag=\"em\">and<\/em>\u00a0lose fat \u2014 thereby achieving a lean, toned physique.<\/p>\n<p>That being said, most fitness pros will understand exactly what you mean when you say, \u201cShow me how to get lean muscle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We asked a few to share their best tips.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Mix Light and Heavy Weights<\/h2>\n<p>Is lifting heavy weights the best way to build muscle for women? Or should you use light or moderately heavy weights to build lean muscle mass?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA mix of both!\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/backintelligence.com\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nicole Lombardo<\/a>, DPT, CSCS, and physical therapist at Back Intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Lombardo recommends working with lighter weights and higher rep schemes (to improve muscle endurance) on one day, then switching to heavier weights and lower rep schemes (to increase muscle mass and strength) the next day.<\/p>\n<p>So Monday\u2019s training plan may include three sets of 10 reps with lighter weights, while Wednesday\u2019s plan consists of five sets of five reps with heavier weights.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-130470 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bodiblog.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/How-to-Build-Lean-Muscle.mbf_.600.4.jpg\" alt=\"Megan Davies doing a muscle burns fat workout\" width=\"600\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>2. Double Dip With Cardio and Strength<\/h2>\n<p>Building lean muscle isn\u2019t just about strength training.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth cardiovascular training and strength training are important for building body mass,\u201d Herrera explains.<\/p>\n<p>Heart-pumping cardio can help decrease your body-fat percentage, while strength training increases the size of your muscles.<\/p>\n<p>Incorporate both into your routine with\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bodi.pxf.io\/c\/4818714\/2210984\/27336\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#mbf Muscle Burns Fat and #mbfa Muscle Burns Fat Advanced<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 these three-week plans combine resistance training and cardio to help you build muscle and burn fat.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Opt for Supersets<\/h2>\n<p>Looking for a time-efficient way to build lean muscle? Try supersets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe superset technique is basically a set of two exercises performed back to back with no rest in between, to maximize the work on a specific muscle group,\u201d Herrera says.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you\u2019re working on building lean muscle in your arms, you might superset biceps curls with triceps dips.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-130467 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bodiblog.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/How-to-Build-Lean-Muscle.600.3.jpg\" alt=\"woman cutting fresh fruits\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>4. Fuel Your Body<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking to build lean muscle, focus on the quality of your food, not the quantity, says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.kissmyketo.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sofia Norton<\/a>, a registered dietitian at Kiss My Keto.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA diet rich in real foods \u2014 not processed junk \u2014 is going to give your body the fuel it needs for a toned physique,\u201d Norton says.<\/p>\n<p>Building lean muscle requires protein, but you don\u2019t need to overdo it. \u201cAround 1.2 to 2 grams per kilogram of body weight is all you need to support muscle synthesis,\u201d Norton says.<\/p>\n<p>A nutritional supplement like\u00a0Beachbody Performance\u00a0can help you hit your daily protein goals when you\u2019re working to build lean muscle.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t rule out carbs, either. Don\u2019t Overlook Recovery<\/h2>\n<p>When you\u2019re trying to build lean muscle, \u201ctaking it easy\u201d might seem counterintuitive. But skimping on recovery time is a\u00a0common workout mistake.<\/p>\n<p>Muscle repair and growth happens between workouts, so make sure you\u2019re giving your body ample time to recover \u2014 and getting a good night\u2019s sleep so you have the energy to tackle tomorrow\u2019s workout.<\/p>\n<h2>6. Commit for the Long Haul<\/h2>\n<p>Building and maintaining muscle isn\u2019t just about achieving a toned physique.
