Can't Wait To Lose Weight?
Then make exercise a habit now.
According to
this article from the WebMD site, "By starting your morning
with physical activity, you set the day's pace, Cedric X. Bryant, PhD, chief
exercise physiologist of the American Council on Exercise says. 'Morning
exercisers tend to stick with their exercise habit,' he says. By doing the bulk
of exercise first thing in the morning, you get your exercise in before other
distractions can intrude. We can all relate to that -- because once the day
gets going, it's hard to get off the treadmill called life. Research suggests
that morning exercise improves sleep, a benefit that could also promote weight
loss, Bryant tells WebMD. One study of overweight women between the ages of 50
to 75 showed that those who engaged in consistent morning exercise (about four
hours a week) slept better than those who exercised less. The evening
exercisers had more trouble falling asleep - even if they fit in the four hours
a week."
Then do cardio in the morning.
According to
this
article by Tom Venuto, "Even though morning aerobic exercise has been
embraced by bodybuilders as a "tried and true" fat loss technique, there is
definitely not a unanimous agreement about its effectiveness, especially in the
scientific community. Most competitive bodybuilders are die-hard advocates of
doing aerobic exercise first thing in the morning before eating their first
meal. They believe it will cause them to mobilize more stored body fat and
increase their metabolic rate all day long."
Not Worried About Gaining Weight?
Then think again. This
article by Tara Pope from the NY Times outlines the
challenges that people face once they gain weight. "While researchers have
known for decades that the body undergoes various metabolic and hormonal
changes while it's losing weight, an Australian team detected something new. A
full year after significant weight loss, these men and women remained in what
could be described as a biologically altered state. Their still-plump bodies
were acting as if they were starving and were working overtime to regain the
pounds they lost. 'What we see here is a coordinated defense mechanism with
multiple components all directed toward making us put on weight,' Joseph
Proietto says. 'This, I think, explains the high failure rate in obesity
treatment.'"
